POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Starting off the week with an introduction and some deets about my art journey. So often we come across art and know little about the artist.
My name is Courtney Colgan, and I am originally from New Jersey. A lot of people ask me “how did you know you wanted to be an artist”? Art has always been #1 FUN and #2 INTERESTING!! I never wanted to do anything else!!
I was lucky enough to have supportive family from the start. Mom always had a ziplock bag of crayons in her purse. Anywhere we went, and we had to wait for something, she would give them to me. Mom always had something for me to draw on: a post it, a scrap piece of paper, a napkin. When we went out to eat I flipped over my paper placement and drew my family’s portraits.
Then I started getting curious: how I do make it look like what it is. Roe-Roe was the first to say “use your eyes. Just look at what’s in front of you.” Roe-Roe did an example still life in my first sketch book (swipe right to see).
I was always in my sketchbook. I remember in middle school, joining Mr. Gaskins Art Club was like finding my tribe. Throughout high school I struggled with almost every subject that wasn’t art. Like really struggled. However I remember certain teachers (Madame) realizing this and allowing me creative projects to do instead.
The thought of college was a nightmare. My grades were so low in high school that my guidance counselor told me I had no chance of getting into Pratt or any of the other art schools. Well we packed up the car and Mom drove me to: Brooklyn,CT, Upstate and Boston. I laid my sketchbooks and art down on the table and got 5 green lights. The following year I moved to Utica, NY to begin my foundation year at Munson Williams Pratt. I excelled through Pratt because I was interested, and I cared. Pratt is a whole other story but one of the best. It’s been 11 years now pioneering through the art world since Pratt. Still going, still pushing, still painting.
