The drive is not for the faint of heart. The High Atlas Mountains have an almost mystical quality. Small, nearly inaccessible villages are nestled into the mountains at every height. Life here can be challenging, particularly in the aftermath of the devastating 2023 earthquake.

Despite those challenges, the people are resilient, and real, progressive change is evident everywhere.

Moroccans are fiercely loyal to and proud of their country, and they genuinely love sharing their culture. At the same time, they are protective of their personal privacy. Photographing people without permission is simply not done.

There is something I deeply respect about their unwillingness to become a byproduct of tourism. They know their country and culture have so much to offer, and they are willing and proud to share it, but on their own terms.

تصنف مدرسة بن يوسف العلمية من أعرق المؤسسات التعليمية في المغرب، أسسها السلطان المريني سنة 747ه/1346م بمدينة مراكش – المدينة الزاهرة بالعلم و الثقافة في ذلك العصر.

إن المدرسة اليوسفية عبارة عن تحفة معمارية عكست الرقي الذي وصلت إليه العمارة المغربية خاصة في عهد الدولة المرينية، وهو ما أشار إليه ابن المؤقت المراكشي في كتابه السعادة الأبدية حين قال : “المدرسة المرينية المشهورة باليوسفية. وهذه المدرسة في غاية الكمال ونهاية الحسن والجمال، عجيبة البنيان، بديعة الإتقان، تسر الناظر، وينشرح بها الخاطر.”

لقد أضحت هذه المنشأة العلمية من بين أجمل و أعظم مدارس السلطان المريني، حتى أن الرحالة ابن بطوطة وصفها بالمدرسة العجيبة التي تميزت بحسن الوضع و إتقان الصنعة، و عند زيارته لها وصفها الوزير و الأديب الغرناطي لسان الدين بن الخطيب بالمدرسة العظمى، ففي ذلك العصر لم تكن هناك مدرسة تضاهي هذه المنشأة العلمية التي بلغ إشعاعها المعرفي و الثقافي الأقطار المجاورة.

Spice is the spice of life ✨

Hectic streets bursting with vendors, hagglers, donkey-drawn carts, mopeds, bicyclists, monkeys make up the tangled maze that are the Souks of Marrakech. Never have I seen a place that better embodies the phrase “teeming with life.” 🤩

Amidst all of this, the beating heart is Rahba Kedima, or Place des Épices, the spice market. This is the place that I dreamed of, the reason I’ve always wanted to visit Marrakech. We found @herbs_store_theoriginal and enjoyed a long visit, talking, learning, smelling, and tasting. Wonderfully fragrant saffron, complex ras el hanouts, piquant long peppers, and a new discovery—eucalyptus sap. It all felt like an apothecary’s trove ✨

Revelation and astonishment ✨

I do not think I was prepared for Moroccan design. It was mind-blowing in every sense of the word, and the pinnacle of it was the incredible Ben Youssef Medersa. Widely considered the apex of Saadian architecture and design, it was constructed in the 1500s as a school of the Quran, and the goal of the building was that of “revelation and astonishment.” After impeccable restoration in both the 1980s and 2016, it very much surpasses that goal today. 🤩

The hand-cut resplendent zellij mosaic tilework, the intricate carved plasterwork, the carved and painted wood, everything comes together with a sense of awe. The very idea that this was made with human hands seems impossible. It’s breath-taking. And now that we’ve visited, I can say it may be one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. I hope I will return again someday, and hopefully many more times in my dreams ✨

Le Tombe saadiane sono state realizzate come luogo di riposo finale per i sovrani e membri della dinastia Saadi.
Vennero fatte costruire dal Sultano Ahmad al-Mansūr intorno al 1557 e furono riscoperte nel 1917, dopo essere state nascoste per secoli.
In questo incredibile giardino si possono vedere oltre cento tombe decorate con piastrelle pregiate ed intagli intricati.
