I’ve spent years chasing sharks, but it was manta rays that put a spell on me.

I first swam with one in 2012, during a dive trip with @denverdivers and @finsattached to Revillagigedo Archipelago (aka Socorro.) I went for the sharks—my favorite marine species—but the giant, graceful mantas stole the show and continue to frequent my aquatic dreams.

That trip I met shark expert Mauricio Hoyos @amaukua and even named a newly identified manta Eleuthera—after the Bahamian island where my love for marine life began at The Island School, and for my Greek roots (Eleuthera means freedom.)

Mauricio later introduced me to La Paz, a world away from the Mexico I thought I knew. I fell for its dramatic beauty and kind community, spending several months a year there over the next three years.

In 2017, I pitched an episode for @changingseastv about the manta rays of Revillagigedo and the scientists studying them (shoutout to Bob, @fridalaral , and @taniapelamatti ). They told us mantas once filled the Gulf of California—but had vanished. Then came whispers they were returning.

Thirteen years after that first encounter, during a trip with @fourthelementdive and @golapaz we set out to see the famous mantas of La Reina, a remote pinnacle near La Paz. Just before our dive, the plan changed—a wreck instead. Murky water, no mantas in weeks, they said. But we took our chances.

The water turned out crystal blue with playful marine life and pelagic fishes. As we neared the end of our dive and began our ascent, I heard the clank clank clank of a tank—the diver’s call for something special.

MANTAAA

This is the kind of encounter that reminds you why you fell in love with the ocean in the first place—and even better to share it with new friends, diving during an event promoting sustainability and innovation.

Shot with Sony a7 siii because I live on the wild side and take photos with a video camera. In @aquaticadigital housing. Thankful for @paditv @scubadivingmag for these experiences. Stay tuned for full trip report soon.
