I’m so grateful for the incredible month I got to spend up in Edinburgh, performing my original score for You and Me (and Whoever Comes Next) alongside the most talented, kind and hilarious bunch of creatives. The whole process of writing the music, adapting traditional folk tunes, and creating my own version of a Kate Bush classic (This Woman’s Work), was a privilege and joy. It was also so exciting to breathe new life into material written years ago with my sister in our band Māsa (@masa.band). Getting to collaborate with everyone at @patchofbluetheatre to tell such an important (and true) story opened my eyes to so many aspects of creativity, teamwork and communication. I was deeply moved during every single show, just feeling the audience react and travel through the story with us. It was also extremely nice to have such a positive reception from reviewers! (**** The Guardian, **** The Scotsman, *****Scotland’s Stage Door). ✨ Thank you to all the people who helped bring this show to life, and I can’t wait for the next chapter to unfold! YOU AND ME (and whoever comes next) | @summerhallarts @edfringe My debut play “You And Me (and whoever comes next)” opens @summerhall tomorrow for this year’s @edfringe. We are on every day (except 12th, 18th & 25th Aug) at 3pm in The Old Lab. The link for tickets is in my bio! :) Based on my own life, the play explores the complex dynamics of care- determinedly embracing both the highs and the lows of living a life where care is a constant. What care is, who gives it and who receives it are questions I’ve thought about for years. I hope the play speaks to the fact that care isn’t just part someone else’s story- it’s part of all of our lives. There are so many people to thank: • Firstly, my long-suffering co-writer (and our director) @alexdoesplays . Thank you so much for the never-ending belief in both me and the project. Thanks also for putting up with my continual edits (sorry, not sorry!). Also, the icon that is @helenchongxo - the three of us did this together and that is very cool! • Next, our producer (@meaghanjette ) and production companies (@3heartscanvas & @PoB) without whom, none of this would have been possible. • Next, @hall_for_cornwall & @the_creation_works from providing us with the most amazing rehearsal space- it was so important to me to have our first preview in Cornwall and that was only possible with your support so thanks so much - very much appreciated! • Next, @boptheatre & @summerhallarts for awarding us The Mary Dick Award. For my debut play to win such a prestigious award is very cool and still blows my brain a little! :) • Next, @nickhernbooks for publishing You And Me (and whoever comes next). To have my debut play published by one of the UK’s leading theatre publishers is wilddd and an extraordinary honour. I have been determined to get the term “pre-disabled” out there but didn’t, in my wildest dreams, imagine being able to find it a home in print already! Thank you so much! Sooooo, if you’re in Edinburgh in the next month, we are all so excited to welcome you and I very much hope to see you soon! P.S. If you want to see why I’m overusing the word “Next”, you’ll have to come and watch! (Image Description: Attached to the image. Please let me know if there’s any issues) Image description: A promotional poster for the stage play you and me (and whoever comes next) on a soft dusty pink background. Across the top are numerous five-star review ratings and critical accolades from publications including The Stage, The Guardian, New York Stage Review, The List, Broadway World, The Adelaide Advertiser, and The Adelaide Theatre Guide. It also highlights awards including Best Theatre of Edinburgh Fringe 2022 (The Stage) and Critic’s Pick and Best Theatre of the Year (The New York Times). Above the title, the text reads: “Patch of Blue and 3 Hearts Canvas in association with Hall for Cornwall present the winner of the Summerhall Mary Dick Award.” Dominating the centre of the poster is the title in large white lettering: you and me, with the subtitle (and whoever comes next) beneath it. Below, in smaller text, it reads: a new play with live music, inspired by a true story. The central image shows a young man using a powered wheelchair in profile, facing left. He wears glasses, a light-coloured textured jumper, dark trousers and white trainers, with his hands resting naturally on the wheelchair controls. Behind him stands a young woman wearing a white long-sleeved top, dark trousers, trainers and a backpack. She appears four times in succession, each figure becoming increasingly blurred as though walking forward, creating a ghosted motion effect that suggests movement, the passage of time, or the many different carers who pass through one person’s life. The wheelchair user remains sharply in focus and stationary while the repeated figures move behind him. A teal banner spans the bottom of the poster with practical information. It includes the Summerhall Arts website and box office number, the performance dates 6–29 August (excluding the 12th, 18th and 25th), the performance time of 3.00pm, and identifies the venue as Summerhall Arts, Venue 26. Logos for Husa and Hall for Cornwall appear on the lower left alongside a QR code for the full programme. The overall design is clean, modern and understated, using the contrast between stillness and repeated movement to reinforce themes of care, continuity and change.)
