Kitchen, Kitchen, Kitchen. 1967–1977.
With Helen Chadwick, Mercedes Cuman & Diane Bond, Milli Gandini, Mako Idemitsu, Birgit Jürgenssen, Alile Sharon Larkin, Lucia Marcucci, Marisa Merz, Clemen Parrocchetti, Martha Rosler, Carolee Schneemann.

Set in the kitchen of a private apartment, “Kitchen, Kitchen, Kitchen” grew out of a rereading of Silvia Federici and Nicole Cox’s “Counterplanning from the Kitchen” (1975), which identifies the kitchen as one of the sites where domestic labour is organised and social reproduction takes shape. From the late 1960s through the 1970s, the kitchen surfaces with striking insistence in the work of many women artists, as feminist thought profoundly reshapes understandings of the relationship between body, labour, knowledge, desire and everyday life. Around the same time, Mariarosa Dalla Costa and Selma James recognise women’s labour within the home as one of the fundamental, yet least visible, structures underpinning economic and social organisation.

The exhibition brings together works made between 1967 and 1977 in different geographical and biographical contexts, forming a constellation of practices that seem to answer one another. The coincidence between the site of the exhibition and the space invoked by the works narrows the distance between representation and use: photographs, videos, textile works, writings, sounds and actions are brought back into contact with the objects and rhythms of a domestic life.

Thank you, Joan Jonas for celebrating your work with us at Judson Church, and happy belated happy birthday to your 90th this summer.

You offered us insights into more six decades of artistic practice in New York City and your future projects, with a special thank you for your incredible Mirror Piece 1/2 reperformance that you did so triumphantly in Berlin in front of thousands of fascinated audience members last season at neue nationalgalerie.

From me, a special thank you, as you were the very first artist I worked with at KW in 1991. At the time you were 54 and I was 24. I'm so grateful that our artistic paths are still in parallel and I couldn't feel more privileged and honored, having started my curatorial career with an artist as groundbreaking and innovative as you. Also a huge thank you to Art International Foundation for organizing this series of artist conversations especially thank you to Carola Jain, Susan Rockefeller, and Marina Kellen French.
And the most special shout-out goes to Angela Goding!
With gratitude to Judson Church and Judson Commons, especially Micah and YooRae, and of course St. Mark's Church. These conversations became a tradition of bringing artists together in a community that is not about selling or buying but just about volunteering and sharing and enjoying each others company with content and a delicious potluck meal.

Thank you to all who joined at @storefrontnyc to learn from the brilliant Martha Rosler and revisit “If You Lived Here…” (1989) and its reverberations into the present. Deeply grateful to Martha for her decades of commitment to housing advocacy and art practice, and to everyone doing the work.

Join us Tuesday, August 18, for a lecture by artist Martha Rosler on her landmark project "If You Lived Here" (1989). Artist Alex Strada will be in conversation with Rosler exploring some of the lessons carried forward into Strada’s current project, "Public Address," currently on view across the city. Together, they will reflect on Rosler’s decades-long engagement with housing, public space, and community—inviting reflection on how questions raised over thirty years ago continue to shape socially engaged artistic practice, and the way we think about housing insecurity, home and belonging today.
