I loved getting to talk with Martha Adams about reading books in translation. @marthasreading is the reader behind one of my favorite Substacks, Martha’s Monthly, that focuses on books in translation. On today’s bonus episode, she talked about how she found her way to translated lit and shares her favorite titles and publishers. What better way to celebrate #womenintranslation month?

What’s the last book you read in translation and how was it?

The full episode is for Patreon and Substack subscribers only, but there’s a preview on the main podcast feed to get a taste.

Reading translated fiction allows us to inhabit and understand a variety of other perspectives. It allows us to read differently by transcending physical borders, fostering empathy, and reminding us how universal the human experience is’ – Martha Adams, founder of Martha’s Monthly, a Substack newsletter that focuses on translated fiction

August marks Women in Translation Month, an annual celebration of women writers from across the world, created to address the gender gap in translated literature. To celebrate its twelfth year, Martha Adams has recommended her favourite novels by women writers in translation

I often get asked where get book recommendations from so here are some of my favourite places to go.

Booktube has always been a core part of book discovery for me and I’ve been watching it for years now. Longform video content will always be it for me. Peruse Project is my golden source for fantasy recommendations and I can always count on BooksandLala for weird fic across all genres. Malissa always recommends books I’ve never heard of before and Shawnaci has a romance for every occasion. Of course, I had to include the internet’s librarian.

I’ve been listening to more bookish podcasts recently and have discovered quite a few books next. Every episode of What Should I Read Next follows the host listen to a guest’s reading ailment and recommends books to fix it. Debutiful features debut authors each episode. The Reading Black Girls is a fun listen and follows the girls discussing everything from recent reads to favourite book boyfriends.

Scrolling substack on my commute is one of my favourite things. Lit Girl does quarterly themed syllabi featuring books and other related media. Literary Africa recommends a book by an African author every day and I always look forward to a new edition of the Books & Bits roundup.

Let me know if you guys want a part 2! I’m also curious to know what your favourite bookish YouTube channels, podcasts and substacks are 🥰

This week marks one year of Galley Brag!! When I first started this Substack, my hope was that it would help me connect with readers and better understand the publishing industry.
While I’ve emerged from the year with more questions than answers, I’ve also gained a renewed love of the book world and all those in it 💌

To celebrate one year, I polled some of the many (23!) people I interviewed over the past year on their fave reads of 2025 and galley brags for 2026. Also shoutout to @j_feingold for capturing that dog in me 😎

Here’s to another year in the freaking books 📚 🥹 🍾

Just finished the fiction portion of Catherine Lacey’s upcoming book - The Möbius Book - and holding my breath for the nonfiction section. I can already tell you that we will be talking / thinking about this one. It is wonderful. 🤓📚🥹

My reading partner is about to be inundated with voicemails 🤭
