🚨Red Alert!🚨 Molokaʻi is re-opening to shipments of coconut rhinoceros beetle (CRB) host material on Thursday, September 24.

The current one-year interim rule prohibiting CRB host material from being shipped to Molokaʻi expires on Wednesday, September 23.

For nearly two months if not longer, Hawaiʻi Department of Agriculture and Biosecurity (DAB) leadership in Honolulu were repeatedly urged by Molokaʻi community members to renew this rule before it expired. They did not.

Foot-dragging by DAB leadership has now all but guaranteed that Molokaʻi will have no protection against CRB host material shipments starting Thursday.

This is unacceptable.

Every day that Molokaʻi remains open to shipments of CRB host material, is a day that the agriculture, ecology, cultural practices, and local economy of the island could be impacted for decades if not indefinitely by CRB. As seen on the neighbor islands, once established, the highly invasive beetle not only decimates niu, but also threatens ʻulu, maiʻa, kalo, and endangered loulu, among many other crops and plants.

Please help to defend Molokaʻi - call the Governor and testify to the Board of Agriculture and Biosecurity to demand that DAB Plant Quarantine Branch leadership make the reinstatement of CRB protections for Molokaʻi their highest priority.
