I embarked on my first visit to Hastings, one Christmas Eve many years ago. I knew once I’d got as far as Charing Cross that train travel with cat is not a good idea. Neither are visits to the seaside at Christmas, but that’s another story.

I’ve returned several times since, to enjoy a swim, fish and chips on the beach, stroll up and down the winding lanes and to pay a visit to what used to be the Jerwood. My cat forever a spiritual companion.

So too on a recent return and my first visit to Hastings Contemporary, the new name for the stunning black seafront building. While admiring the more than 150 works of art selected for the art museum's first open competition, I started spotting cats on several of the paintings and found some more in the children’s displays that run alongside the main exhibition.

There is, of course, a long tradition of ship’s cats.

I’ve written a review of what else I saw at The Open: Odyssey which is now live @worldoffad

Visited FLOWERS – Flora in Contemporary Art & Culture at the Saatchi Gallery last week, and it was even bigger and busier than I expected! I was especially drawn to Grace Gillespie’s delicate and colourful linocut flowers artwork and Miriam Tölke’s Flower of Yesterday—a mesmerising montage I couldn’t take my eyes off. So poetic, so beautifully composed (you can find both artworks on the last two slides of this carousel).

These are just a few snapshots from the exhibition—consider this your spoiler alert! You’ve got time to visit, it’s on until 5th May 2025.

Flowers @saatchi_gallery 🌷🌿 Fleeting trip back to London to see this exhibition - which included the work of my amazingly talented friend @sophiemess_, who drenched the whole entrance hallway in a joyful burst of colour & oversized florals!! 🌼
