Lovely to see TroubleChutes featured in Hinton Online! 💛

The article shares the story behind a project that has been many years in the making — bringing together original songs, illustrations and guided discussion to help children explore their thoughts, feelings and experiences through music.

One of the things that I’ve always found helpful is giving children something to respond to, rather than asking them cold to explain what they’re feeling. A song or a character can open up conversations and discoveries that might never have happened through direct questioning.

It’s wonderful to see this aspect of TroubleChutes reaching a wider audience, particularly as we begin introducing the resource to more schools.

Some collaborations begin at the beginning of a song. Others arrive later and help you hear what it can still become.

A little behind the scenes from the journey of Something Real, with Stuart Epps at his studio in Cookham — and, in the second photo, with my co-producer and long-time TroubleChutes collaborator Henry Thomas.

Henry and I originally recorded Something Real during the pandemic, with drummer Martyn Barker, guitarist Tony Qunta and pianist Clifford Slapper recording their parts remotely. The foundations and emotional centre of the song were already there when Stuart came into the picture several years later, but his fresh ears and wealth of experience gave us the opportunity to build further.

There was also a lovely piece of serendipity in Stuart’s arrival. Long before he became involved, when explaining my vision for “Something Real” to the musicians, I’d referenced the dreamlike quality of early Elton John songs such as Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and Rocket Man. Stuart had, of course, worked closely with Elton during those formative years.

At Stuart’s studio I had the opportunity to re-record my vocals, and he brought his long-term collaborator Paul Hirsh into the project, whose additional piano and string textures added another emotional colour to the arrangement. Stuart’s mastering then brought clarity and polish to the finished recording.

What I particularly appreciated was the confidence Stuart showed in me, my voice and the song. Despite the extraordinary artists he has worked with throughout his career, he was generous in his appreciation of the music and trusted my instincts around my vocal as we worked towards the finished recording.

Henry and Stuart came into Something Real at very different stages, but both understood something in different ways that has always mattered enormously to me: every musical and technical decision ultimately has to serve the emotional truth of the song.

Very grateful for what they each brought to “Something Real”— and lovely to have these photographs from two visits to Stuart’s studio to mark part of that journey.

Let me tell you about last night. We had a wonderful evening sharing the stories, through song, of the female singer songwriters that helped shape popular music. The Union Chapel was packed to the rafters and the choir a wonderful force of positive energy. The band are my friends, my family and the very very best. My brother in music and co writer Tony Remy was on fire. My Italian comrade Gianni Vancini was a brilliant addition and what beautiful backing vocals, blending so perfectly with my voice from Silvia Losappio and Otis Coulter. Mike Willis was a great opener getting the audience to sing ‘All our friends are gonna die’ and then joining the masterclass choir ( who were brilliant ) with Lilybud Dearsley, Juliet Russell and Helen Sharpe. Thankyou to Paul Madden and Cathie the wonderful vicar at Union Chapel along with Ed for helping Tony and I realise this project at the Union Chapel. Thanks to my brother Rod and niece Pearl for helping film and thank you to all of you that came out and supported us. We had a ball and we’d love to do it again sometime. Please spread the word. A first glimpse of Sam Chegini’s artistic interpretation of “Something Real”, the Official Music Video, premiering this Friday at 5pm.

The journey behind this film has had several chapters.

The footage began with the TroubleChutes television pilot, directed by Javali Marri and filmed by Jag Concepcion, exploring how the framework might translate from schools to the screen: songs addressing everyday emotional challenges, brought together with illustration and conversation to create space for children’s own responses.

Key moments of the children’s authentic engagement were then shaped into an original “Something Real” music video by George Clare, who directed and filmed several of my previous music videos including “Facing Life”, “Happy Ever After” and “Making Waves”.

When award-winning Iranian animator Sam Chegini was finally able to reconnect after communication had been disrupted during the war, he saw that film and was inspired to create a new artistic interpretation of the footage — bringing his own distinctive visual language to what had been captured.

That is the film we’ll be premiering this Friday at 5pm.

George’s original film will also be shared subsequently on YouTube, offering the opportunity to see the original footage and work from which Sam’s interpretation grew.

And the visual journey of “Something Real” isn’t over yet: Sam has now begun work on an entirely new, fully animated film for the song.

Having both versions — one rooted in the children’s real imagery and one reimagined through animation — will also become part of the wider resource material, helping open up conversations about perception, imagination, and what is “real” and what is interpreted.

For now, here’s a glimpse of what’s coming on Friday… ✨

Drummer Martyn Barker reflects on the way TroubleChutes engages with some of the difficult parts of children’s emotional worlds — while allowing the music itself to remain expressive, playful and liberating.

That balance has always mattered to me. Music can give complicated feelings somewhere to move, while leaving room for each child to discover what the song brings up for them.

It has been a real honour to bring Martyn’s extraordinary musicianship into TroubleChutes — a drummer whose work with Shriekback, King Swamp, and collaborations with artists including Robert Plant, Marianne Faithfull, Beth Gibbons and many others has shaped so much remarkable music.

Thank you, Martyn, for bringing your energy, instinct, and deep musical intelligence to the band and for considering the lyrics so carefully, bringing your own emotional experience and response so thoughtfully to the project.
