There’s nothing quite like watching a kid’s eyes light up when they discover how conservation really works. From cattle ranching and timber to hunting and farming, these are some of the tools that help keep Florida wild. It’s an honor to share that story with the next generation. Thank you to the incredible volunteers who dedicate their time every year to help teach, inspire, and invest in the future of conservation. #Floridawildlife #wildlifeconservation #keepflwild #staywild #education đŸ“č- @travisthompson

My dad looks at 50 students. The dust in the barn has him hoarse from doing this over and over again. He lifts the picture and asks: “What’s this a picture of?” “COWBOY” comes the response. Every time. “Look closer . . .” Dad’ll say, and eyes light up. @bupdikeart holds up the picture to a different group. Perpetual motion, 44 kids, kicking dust, a buzzing amoeba of “Hornets” shirts or “McKeel” logos. “What do you see in this picture?” Blair asks, smiling. “Horses! Cows! (Gasp) A COWBOY!” “Almost” Blair grins - “Not a cowBOY, but a . . .” @jerrys_wild_life holds up the same picture. Jerry is a natural at this. He wears a cowboy hat and boots, smiling as he takes in every second of the moment. This is what he does on his day off. This is magic. “What’s this a picture of?” “A bank robber!” “Horses” “Trees” “A COWBOY” Jerry smiles even wider, and points in the direction of the last answer - “Almost . . . “ Again. The eyes change. I’ve watched it from behind the speaker. I’ve watched it where you can’t see the kids’ faces. Doesn’t matter. The eyes change. I promise. “A COWGIRL!!!!!” We teach conservation. Cows keep Florida green. Crops provide food for us and habitat for wildlife. Fire is like the reset button on your Xbox. Timber gives us doors and desks and paper. And quail. I have a bias. I’m in it to say “hunting is conservation” to thousands of kids, over and over and over. They put together the world’s biggest puzzle, and they walk the @floridawildlifecorridor as @rainfrogranch talks about Aldo Leopold and @polkforever talks about wetlands. But. My favorite moment? Without fail? Every single time? “This is our friend @mary_hardee and SHE’s a cowgirl! This is what she does every day . . . Taking care of cows and wild Florida” It’s quick. It’s throwaway in the onslaught of the day the kids go through. 2 years ago, @mtm_photo took a photo of Mary doing what hundreds of Floridians do every day. Love the land. By the end of next week, 13,000 students, not all at the same time, but 13,000 students will have had that moment, where their eyes widen just a little, the corners of their mouths upturn just a tad, and they yell, in unison: “COWGIRL!”

Recently, our #LadyLegend Mary Margaret Hardee had the opportunity to speak on the @americancattlewomen WIRED - Women in Ranching Education and Development - panel alongside Gabrielle Molina Homer, Kalyn McKibben Grokett, and Becca Johnson during the tradeshow at CattleCon. She got to speak on a women’s perspective within the beef industry and she represented both women in ranching and the Florida cattle industry well! We are so thankful for her! #HerdingHerStory #cattlecon #leadtheway #cometogetheroverbeef

Giving Tuesday. There are a lot of good causes in conservation. A ton. One of our donors calls @allflaorg “the best bang for your buck in conservation” - from changing our state constitution to touching the lives of thousands of students, our team is in rooms up and down the state, constantly working to make sure our woods, water, wildlife, and way of life are protected. We are. All Florida. Link in bio

Buck Island Ranch, Part 1 I was fortunate enough to be invited to ride along and take some pictures at Buck Island Ranch, which is a 10,500 acre working cattle ranch in the headwaters of the Everglades. This ranch has been part of @archboldstation Agroecology Program for the last 30 years, where scientists and ranchers work alongside one another to improve ranching and its sustainability. It is an incredible piece of property, with tons of wildlife scattered all around the ranch. It was the perfect morning to go round up some of their cows, check to confirm if they’re pregnant, brand and tag the ones that needed it, and provide any necessary treatment. I couldn’t get all the pictures I liked into one post, so there will be 2 more posts to come over the next couple weeks! A huge thank you to @mary_hardee and Gene Lollis, and the rest of the crew for allowing us to tag along on such an awesome experience and giving us a brief look into all that goes on in Buck Island Ranch! #buckislandranch #archboldbiologicalstation #cattleranch #branding

Teaching kids about the Florida Wildlife Corridor isn’t just about connecting conservation lands it’s about connection itself. It’s about connecting us to these wild places, to the wildlife that calls them home, the practices we use to manage these lands, and to the idea that we all play a part in protecting them. The missing piece of the puzzle is them and us. đŸŸ #FloridaWildlifeCorridor #Conservation #StayWild #Jerryswildlife #Floridawildlife #nature #education #keepfloridawild #Hunting #Timber #Ranching #Farming #PrescribedFire

New episode! Mary Margaret Hardee: Herding Her Story In part three of our deep dive into Archbold Biological Station and its 10,500-acre working cattle operation, Buck Island Ranch we sit down with assistant ranch manager, Mary Margaret Hardee, a lifelong Floridian whose path winds through ranching, conservation, and the cultural fabric of wild Florida. Growing up on a family ranch in Chiefland, Mary is no stranger to early morning saddling horses. Her favorite way to start the day is greeting the sunrise as she helps gather cattle. At Buck Island Ranch, she bridges the worlds of production and preservation working alongside scientists, ranchers, and land managers to show that cattle country and conservation thrive together. Off the saddle she’s the co-host of Herding Her Story with @itshergina, a podcast spotlighting women shaping the future of ranching and land stewardship. In our conversation Mary Margaret shares her family’s story, how her upbringing informs her role today, and the balancing act of protecting both natural resources and a way of life that has endured for generations. We also talk about the future of ranching in Florida, the pressures landowners face, and how storytelling can shape the next chapter and generation for conservation-minded agriculture. If you’ve ever wondered how science and tradition meet on the open range, or what it means to love and fight for a place you call home, this episode will resonate.
