Congratulations to Michelle Lewis, who has just been selected by @mainewriters207 as the winner of both the Maine Literary Award for Memoir and the John N. Cole Award! SPARE was chosen by @maryhats as the first book in the Barrow Street Prose Series. Cappello writes, “Breath. Space. Uncommon voice. Distillation. The play of meaning within a single term. How much can you “do without”? When “the bottom falls out,” what are you left with? How do you live?” We are so grateful to @mainewriters207 for these honors. Find SPARE in our bookstore (link in bio) and stay tuned for news on our next open call for prose, later this year!

And so is our latest Flight! This one has a special place in my heart. Please read it all. You might want to start with @maryhats Mary Cappello’s adapted keynote from this year’s @nonfictionnow conference in June. I left this speech dazed, wracked, inspired, and undone in the best way. Couldn’t be more thrilled that Mary entrusted us with it. Listen to her read as you follow along! And extra special to feature the Art of the multitalented @chargardner, whose work I’ve loved and admired for so long! Flight 23.4 imagines a future that springs forth from eternal optimism. These are unprecedented times in a hyper-connected world. As the institutions we were taught to trust fail in real time, compassion becomes our most vital tool. It is all too easy to see history happening around us and feel helpless. How do we rescue a future from a past that is intent upon repeating itself? The answers and approaches are different for each of our authors and artists. Yet in every piece, there are instructions for survival: talk to a stone when your mother dies, have a one-on-one with Plato, rewrite the past one hundred years down the line, rendezvous with a robot at the end of the world. We are thrilled to announce the first episode of Blackbird Literary Podcast. Included in v23n4 are poems by Diane Seuss, Oksana Maksymchuk, Li Jhen-Hao (transl. by Nicholas Wong), Jacob Griffin Hall, Elly Luisa Salah, Shira Dentz, Henry Hart, Ron Smith, and Clare Rossini. In creative nonfiction, there are two essays by Elie Keller and Angela Townsend, as well as a special feature by Mary Cappello. In fiction, we are excited to feature two pieces by Kiik Araki-Kawaguchi. In Book Reviews, Interviews, and Craft Essays, Richard Hamilton reviews Sarah Audsley’s Landlock X. Char Gardner’s cerebral drawings remind us that there are entire, strange worlds inside us. There is resounding hope in this Flight. We hope it brings you comfort.

As ever, I took too few photos, but I’m reeling with joy and love and something like devotion after this year’s #NonfictionNow conference at Notre Dame. Huge, messy gratitude to @nikwalker28 for being such a light, and @margotsinger for inviting me to panel with her, and the whole team behind this magical experience, including @robinhemleyauthor @davidcarlin. The panels were fortifying, the keynotes devastating, and the readings unhinged in all the right ways. And special props to @treyburnarthall who used this opportunity to record conversations with some of the most brilliant nonfiction writers in the world, coming to you in the Blackbird Literary Podcast starting in August. Stay tuned. Stay safe. Keep doing the work. Keep doing the work.
