Thursday was a very special visit with the @historic_roses_group. A rose lovers pilgrimage. A bucket list garden. @europa.rosarium and even more importantly, led by a leading world-expert Hella Brumme. Fan girling. Here were some of my favourites, but you'd need days here. So many roses to learn about.

Picture 1 is the gallica rose 'Fanny Bias'. Quite upright, fragrant and the most perfect flower.

Picture 2 is 'Mme Charles Frédéric Worth', which is a rugosa hybrid. Wonderful fragrance, rugosa parentage with 'Paul Neyron' too.

'Ombrée Parfaite' is in picture three. The photo does not do the colour of this new to me gallica justice.

Number 4 is one of my all-time favourites 'Jenny Duval'. So hard to photograph the colour as it has such a range. Often confused with 'Président de Sèze', but the latter's flowers are more double, the whole plant is taller and the peduncles are longer. @carolsidegardens has the best collection of these and is one of my all-time favourite gardens.

Picture 5 is 'Charles de Mills'

The rugosa hybrid 'Linda Campbell' is next, which was bred by Ralph Moore.

Picture 7 is the gallica 'Cosimo Ridolfi', whose name I love.

'Cardinal de Richelieu' is in picture 8. I really was drawn to these colours on the trip.

'Belle Isis' in pic 9. Important in the @david_austin_roses breeding programme at the early stages.

Picture 10 is 'Soleil d'Or'. An important rose for being the first crossed yellow rose from R. foetida f. persiana.

11 is 'Alain Blanchard'.

12 is 'Impératrice Josephine'. The famous collector of roses. See @martin.stott for a wonderful video about her this week.

13 is one of my favourite Damasks, 'Celsiana'.

14 is the beautiful 'Duchesse d'Angoulême', which has beautiful two-toned colour.

Another of our favourite days with the @historic_roses_group was visiting the gardens of Karin Schade, which is not far out of Göttingen, where I studied German many moons ago.

Amongst a wonderful garden and nursery Karin has a wide collection of Alba roses.

Picture 1 is a rose called 'Fosca', which is a gallics hybrid from Italy, with that rich colour everybody is looking for.

Picture 2 is a sport of 'Roseraie de Commer', which I think is much more refined.

Picture 3 is a rose from Rudolf Geschwind. He was a rose breeder from the Austro-Hungarian empire who was known for breeding frost hardiness into roses. The roses is called 'Futtaker Schlingrose', which is a multiflora hybrid.

Picture 4 is the gallica 'Violacea' which is one of my favourite singles of that colour.

Picture 5 is R. complicata that was littered with insects and makes a great climber too.

Picture 6 is the HRG enjoying listening to our host.

The last pictures show some of the Alba rose identifiers shared with us by Karin: grey/green foliage, tree like form, long and think receptacle/ hips, sickle-like hooks and long and pointed leaves.

Another benefit, amongst many, of a @historic_roses_group trip is having access to private gardeners of rose enthusiasts around the world and on Friday afternoon we were treated to a trip to Escherode to see Andreas and Stefan's garden.

Picturd 1 and 2 are a seedling of the well-known 'Paul's Himalayan Musk'. It didn't seem to be a vigorous, but was growing through a dense hedge. It did have a layer of unrefined charm that I loved.

Picture 3 is a Rosa multiflora hybrid that Andreas raised and christened for his town of Escherode, which was also almost thornless.

Picture 4 is one of my all-time favourite Old Roses for fragrance, flower and grace: 'Ispahan'.

Picture 5 is the first rose raised and commercialised by @david_austin_roses 'Constance Spry'.

Picture 6 is a seedling from Canadian bred rose 'Patricia Macoun', which comes from Rosa helenae.

The 7th picture is a seedling (this was the garden of the seedlings!) of 'Bobbie James.

The last photos are of the group enjoying wonderful conversation, tea and cake in Andreas and Stefan's garden. Many members of the German Rose Society were also there to greet us. It is great to share a passion with like-minded people across the world.

A wonderful first day yesterday with the @historic_roses_group on the start of the trip to Germany. We landed in Frankfurt and made our way over to Wilhelmshöhe Park to look at the roses in the UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is only a hop, skip, and a jump away from where I went to university in Göttingen.

Picture 1 is, I think, 'Petite Orléanaise', which I have only read about but never seen. Most perfect flower and good fragrance. Pic 2 is the gallica 'Hippolyte', which has the most wonderful colour. The best collection of gallica roses, and one of my favourite gardens is found at home of my friends at @carolsidegardens.

Picture 3 is 'Plaisenterie' which I have just started growing at home. Pictures 4 and 5 are R. multiflora, which has often been attributed to one of the reasons for spread of RRD in america, since it is planted all over and spreads rapidly so a good place for the mite to hide. It produces hundreds of seeds in a hip which makes it easy to spread. Through the 30s and 50s it was described as "horse high, bull tough and hog tight" and was planted along a lot of central reservations.

Pictures 6 and 7 are portlands 'Indigo' and 'Jacques Cartier', both of which have a great fragrance. The last two roses are 'Marguerite Hilling'.

A very interesting public park and more photos to follow!
