If girls are enrolled in school, does that mean they have equal access to education? And why should government budgets account for the different needs of boys and girls?

In this episode of GGE Files: 5 Questions with Our GGE Program and Innovation Manager, Ifeoluwa Adewole, (@theifeoluwa), connects these questions to AREAi’s work through Getting Girls Equal (GGE), exploring how gender-responsive budgeting can shape girls’ access to education and their ability to stay and progress in school.

Watch the conversation.

Impact. Education. Technology.

These were at the heart of Experience AI facilitator training in Abuja last week.

A total of 130 facilitators took part in the training, gaining the knowledge and skills to introduce young people to artificial intelligence, understand how it works, and think critically about its use.

The goal goes beyond training facilitators. It is about preparing educators to take AI education into their classrooms and communities, helping young people understand the technology shaping their world and engage with it responsibly.

With Abuja completed, we are looking ahead to Yola, where more educators will be equipped to bring these learning opportunities to children and young people.

This programme is made possible through our partnership with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, whose collaboration is helping us expand access to AI education across Nigeria.

One training at a time, we are building towards a future where more young people have the knowledge to understand AI, question it and use it responsibly.

This week in Maiduguri, we trained 162 teachers and community educators to become Experience AI facilitators. Many of them teach in IDP camps, community learning centres and schools with little or no internet.

The results speak for themselves:
- The share of teachers who feel ready to teach AI almost doubled, from about half to more than 9 in 10
- 96% said the training boosted their knowledge and confidence to teach AI
- 96% rated it high quality and useful for the classroom

The biggest jump? Teachers' confidence to talk with young people about fairness and bias in AI, which is exactly what learners need to use AI wisely.

Every child deserves to understand the technology shaping their future, wherever they learn. These facilitators will now carry Experience AI into classrooms across Borno State.

Next stop: Abuja, Makurdi and Yobe.

Is Oyo State’s Education Budget Doing Enough to Address Girls’ Educational Needs?

Building on the conversations around gender-responsive budgeting, Part 2 of our reflections highlights more perspectives from Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) across Oyo State on the current education budget and its implications for girls’ education.

From examining budgetary allocations to identifying gaps and opportunities, the discussions provided valuable insights into how public resources can better address the barriers girls face in accessing, remaining in, and completing their education.

Through the #GGE2.0 programme, participants reflected on key lessons, shared their observations, and explored ways to strengthen accountability and ensure that education budgeting responds to the realities and needs of girls.

These conversations continue to inform advocacy efforts aimed at promoting a more inclusive, equitable, and gender-responsive education budget in Oyo State.

What does it take to move education innovation forward?

Ideas that respond to real challenges. People willing to test what’s possible. And an ecosystem that helps promising solutions go further.

At the Future of Education in Nigeria Summit, our Innovation Showcase brought five education solutions into the conversation, spanning foundational learning assessment, girls’ retention, offline learning, education data and teacher support.

Each solution is at a different stage, but all speak to the need for approaches that respond to the realities of Nigeria’s education system.

The next step is to build the connections between innovators, educators, policymakers, funders and other stakeholders that can help these solutions grow and reach the learners who need them.

Swipe through to explore the solutions.

Maiduguri was the starting point. Now, Experience AI continues in ABUJA. 📍

Following the completion of our first Facilitators Training in Maiduguri, we’re taking the next step in Abuja on 16th & 17th October.

This time, 171 facilitators will gain the knowledge and practical, classroom-ready resources to teach AI literacy, helping more children understand how AI works and use it responsibly.

One training completed. Another city. More educators preparing to bring AI literacy into the classroom. 🚀

A girl’s right to education should never depend on her circumstances, her community’s expectations, or whether her needs are prioritised in the decisions that shape her future.

Ending child marriage and advancing girls’ rights require more than good intentions. They require education systems that protect girls’ opportunities, policies that respond to the barriers they face, and public resources that translate commitments into meaningful change.

As we mark the International Day of the Girl Child, we reaffirm the importance of building education systems where every girl can access quality education, remain in school, and realise her full potential.

Investing in girls means investing in a future where their rights are protected, their voices count, and their opportunities are not limited by gender.

Happy International Day of the Girl Child!

Her potential was never the barrier. The barriers were.

Every girl deserves the opportunity to learn, the freedom to dream, the confidence to speak, and the space to lead. When we give girls access to education, technology, information, and opportunities, we empower them to shape not only their futures but also the future of their communities.

This International Day of the Girl child, AREAi celebrates every girl who dares to ask questions, discover her voice, embrace her potential, and imagine a world beyond limitations.

Because girls are not just the leaders of tomorrow. They are the innovators, creators, and changemakers of today.

Let us keep breaking barriers, creating opportunities, and building a world where every girl can thrive.

We see you. We hear you. We believe in you.

Happy International Day of the Girl Child! :purple_heart:
