I’m so happy and grateful to be a part of this amazing group of women! What a fun reception @bmayergallery just a couple weekends ago!

A big thank you to Bridgette, Emma, and the incredible team at Bridgette Mayer Gallery for curating and installing this beautiful exhibition.

Thank you to everyone who came out to the reception! I loved seeing you and enjoyed all the conversations!

Careful planning and a lot of hard work has gone into this show. I’m very proud of these new paintings; it’s a dream to show again at Bridgette’s gallery.

New Talent: Six Rising Painters Exploring Landscape and Abstraction is on view through December 19th. I hope you’ll stop by to see the show if you’re in Philadelphia this fall!

a gallery show is something that takes work. lots of it. on the part of the gallery and their staff. on the part of the artist. on the part of the support crew...those folks who show up at these events to support what the artist is doing.

the day after an opening is, for me, a time to reflect on how I feel about the work, the conversations that I had, the people that I met or reconnected with.

I had so many great conversations last night. with friends who always make the trip, no matter where these shows happen. with the artists in the show, some of whom I was meeting for the first time and really wishing I had more time to just quietly talk about their work. with new collectors who I was so happy to meet, to learn more about them and what they do, and to share my process.

and then there is that reaffirmation that what I am doing is fun and challenging and meaningful to me...and a true feeling of pride in having been included in such a wonderful show.

and my heartfelt thanks to Bridgette and Emma, and to everyone who helps make the gallery run so beautifully. there is so much work that goes on behind the scenes to make a show like this happen, and I am incredibly grateful to all of you.

please do stop in over the coming months. you have until December 19th to see it.

Mary Zeran @maryzeran says that joy is a superpower. Looking at her series, her real superpower is quieter than that.

Zeran works in collage, cutting and layering transparent polyester film she has painted with fluid acrylic, letting color slide and pool across uneven surfaces. The technique traces back to Shibori and to her own family: her mother a maker, her grandmother a textile designer. You can feel that lineage in the work. These pieces read like fabric before they read like paint… folded, dyed, pieced.

Moving across this body of work, some colors just keeps returning. A cobalt blue stripe. A red that shows up as a solid plane in one piece and a striated, wood-grain texture in the next. It never feels repetitive, because it never repeats the same way twice, it comes in a different material, a different density, a different mood each time, so that recognizing it feels less like noticing a habit and more like recognizing a voice.

It just makes you certain, three pieces in, that you're looking at one person's hand.
And I'm sure that hand is doing something harder than it looks. Each composition reads like accumulation, like scraps gathered, brushstrokes left where they landed, edges collaged in whatever order they came. But look again and the randomness dissolves, or should I say it involved into a different one? The one that nature shows us, the loose, poured swirls of black and green are her landscape, moving like terrain around them, water flowing and finding its own level, a hillside settling where gravity put it... Nothing here is as improvised as it first appears. It's built piece by piece, toward a specific feeling, the wildness. And yes, they appeared to be much more than just joy.

Zeran is undoubtedly a master of collage, a messenger of color. If joy is her superpower, as she says, then collage is how she proves it: page after page of evidence that something this alive can also be this carefully, deliberately true.

We delivered two pieces to Bridgette Mayer Gallery today and had a chance to see the New Talent show. Wow. It is gorgeous. You really need to see this work in person. Every single painting is singing its own beautiful song and then taking time to have conversations with their neighbors. Six artists. One gallery. There is such a cohesive story about how this work all relates and you can really see it as you walk through the show. Which you NEED to do!

I took a moment to talk about how the layers of my work come together to form these watery landscapes.

The show opens September 1 with an artists reception September 18th at 5:30pm.

Save the date!

There are talented artists across the United States and many of them I have had the pleasure to connect with over many years through curating projects and placing their works.

I recently set out to explore some of my favorite artists and bring them to the forefront of my programming this fall with the new art season quickly approaching. It has resulted in an incredible grouping of six women artists that I am pleased to exhibit and announce:

We’re excited to announce our upcoming New Talent: Six Rising Painters Exploring Landscape & Abstraction. On display from September 1st to December 19, this exhibition brings together six emerging to mid-career artists from Philadelphia and across the United States whose work reimagines contemporary painting through abstraction, landscape, color, and process. Featuring paintings by Kirby Fredendall, Michele Kishita, Erin McIntosh, Ellen Soffer, @angelawarrenart , and Mary Zeran, the exhibition highlights a dynamic range of visual languages while revealing a shared interest in perception, memory, emotion, and material experimentation.

Are you familiar with any of these artists’ works? Please share the love if you know them and let us hear from you!

Make sure to stay tuned for more information soon. Here you will see firsthand behind-the-scenes, installation, details about the artists’ creative processes, and much more! If you would like any exhibition information in advance, please email eburke@bmayerart.com
