Israel acts as a cautious, behind-the-scenes powerbroker in Sudan, balancing diplomatic normalization goals with intelligence contacts across both sides of the civil war.

In 2020, Sudan and Israel agreed to normalize relations under the Abraham Accords.

The civil war that broke out in April 2023 stopped the two nations from finishing the formal agreement.

Israel has held discreet security meetings with leaders of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). RSF delegations traveled to Tel Aviv in 2025 and 2026 to meet with Israeli intelligence and foreign ministry officials.

Israel also keeps open lines of communication with General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the leader of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), as both sides vie for regional backing.

Israel wants to protect shipping lanes and maritime security in the Red Sea. Israel also aims to limit the influence of rival nations like Iran, which has offered military aid to the Sudanese army

On August 19, 1991, Gavin Cato, a child of Guyanese immigrants, was struck and killed by a station wagon in Brooklyn, New York. The car was part of a motorcade escorting Rebbe Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the leader of the Lubavitch Hasidic community.

His cousin was also severely injured in the crash. Tensions flared after a Jewish-run Hatzolah ambulance evacuated the driver from the hostile scene while emergency responders attended to the children, fueling rumors of preferential treatment that sparked four days of civil unrest. Rip Gavin

Who benefits from the minerals that the Congolese people are dying for?

Foreign Nations and Corporations:

China controls a large share of the mining, extraction, and processing operations for copper and cobalt.

Western Countries and Companies:

The United States and other global powers secure strategic mineral partnerships for electric vehicles, defense tech, and smartphones.

Multinational Tech and Auto Giants:

Global brands buy the raw cobalt and coltan to build everyday consumer electronics and green energy batteries.

Armed Groups and Corrupt Networks Local and Regional Militias:

Armed groups in eastern Congo control lucrative mining zones like Rubaya to fund conflicts and illegal trade.

Smugglers and Corrupt Officials:

Illicit networks profit by moving valuable coltan, gold, and tin across borders.

The eastern regions of the Democratic Republic of the Congo have been for decades in a state of internecine conflict that has often peaked in open war. The conflict is driven by a profitable and complex network of actors, including local militias, neighboring nations, multinational technology firms, and emerging global powers, who exploit the DRC's mineral wealth, including cobalt, coltan, and gold, which is essential to global industries like smartphones and electric vehicles. The conflict in the southern regions of the DRC has become an overlooked commodities hub in which violence remains cheap for those who wish to access conflict minerals at low cost and low levels of public scrutiny. The crisis in the DRC continues primarily because influential actors benefit economically and politically from ongoing instability.

An estimated 40,000 children work in the informal mining sector of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, driven by systemic poverty, lack of educational infrastructure, and armed conflict. These children primarily labor in Artisanal and Small-scale Mining sites to extract minerals that are essential to global technology supply chains.

Cobalt:

The DRC holds roughly 70% of global reserves, vital for lithium-ion batteries in smartphones and electric vehicles.

Coltan:

Used to extract tantalum for electronic capacitors.

Copper & Gold:

Mined alongside other valuable electronics components.
