This screenshot of Ballotpedia’s Santa Ana mayoral candidate listing was sent to me and it shows photos for the other two candidates and a silhouette for me.

Is it ironic that I’m the only candidate is the only one shown without a photo? It’s a fair question, and I’m asking Ballotpedia for an explanation and an update.

I’m Dwayne Shipp, candidate for Mayor of Santa Ana. I’m here, I’m accessible, and I’m ready to provide my photo.

What you looking at right now is history the first black man to run for mayor in the City Of Santa Ana California. You can’t erase history so thank you to everyone that get a kick out of me Being human and making mistakes that is totally cool. Continue to hide behind keyboards. I’m just a Santa Ana boy who grew into a man, and through it all, I never stopped believing in my city. As a Black man stepping into the race for Mayor in a city that is nearly 77% Hispanic or Latino, I understand what this moment represents—but I don’t see color lines when it comes to loving and serving people. My love for people has always been across the board. Since throwing my hat in the race, I’ve experienced more negative comments and hate than I ever have in my life, but none of it will change my heart or my purpose. My service didn’t start with politics; it started in the community, long before I ever thought about putting my name on a ballot. Do I have all the answers? No. Am I willing to listen, learn, grow, and do the work? Absolutely. Do I believe I have what it takes to lead? Absolutely. I wasn’t chosen because of my appearance—I was chosen by my assignment. And that assignment is bigger than me. I’m not running against anyone. I’m running for everyone. This is my city too, I still believe in Santa Ana, and no amount of hate will ever be stronger than the love I have for its people. — Dwayne SHIPP

For those who keep asking me where I stand on ICE, let me make my position clear and put it on the record.

The only ICE I support is Ice Cube, Ice-T, Ice Spice, and The Iceman. 😎

But behind the wordplay is something I take seriously: people deserve to be treated with dignity.

The federal government has a job to do — and so do I. I’m not running for Mayor to do the federal government’s job. My job is Santa Ana. My responsibility is to the people who live, work, raise their families, and build their futures right here in our community.

And let me add this: Santa Ana is a charter city, and I support the fact that we are a charter city. I believe in strong local government and using the authority available to our city to make decisions that put the needs, safety, and well-being of Santa Ana residents first. Being a charter city does not put us above state or federal law, but where we have local authority, I believe Santa Ana should use it responsibly to serve and protect our community.

Public safety is one thing. Terrorizing people is another. And no family should have to feel like a loved one has simply been taken or disappeared without answers, accountability, or due process.

I believe in the rule of law, but the rule of law must also include due process, dignity, accountability, and humanity.

Federal government, handle your responsibilities. I’ll stay focused on mine — serving my community, protecting our neighborhoods, and standing up for the people of Santa Ana.

No matter where you come from or what you look like, at the end of the day, we are one human race and one community.

That’s where I stand.
