You know how the story we carry can keep us stuck? For the past few months, I’ve been writing my origin story. Some of it came easily. Some of it I’d only ever told a close friend. One piece still ached: the aftermath of a terrible relationship more than a decade ago, and the role some of my friends played in it. So this weekend, I brought it to “Change Your Narrative, Change Your Life”, a workshop hosted by @teresarodriguez_sf and @libertepress_ in the historic Presidio of San Francisco. Just a small group of women, a notebook each, tea, and little French cakes. ☕️🍰 Teresa’s taught us the facts don’t change, but the story can. She walked us through the process step-by-step: 1. Separate what happened from what we made it mean. 2. Share it out loud in a safe space. 3. Rewrite the story as we choose to carry it forward. Everyone in that room had a tender story, and in each of theirs, I recognized a piece of my own. Listening to them allowed me to recalibrate how I saw that season of my life, and find far more empathy for the younger version of myself. My biggest takeaway?
