What a magical week screening at @afo_olomouc, a full circle moment made complete by winning the audience award and best science communication, international competition ✨

Sharing the magic of the universe with audiences is why this film exists and I’m so proud to have this recognised by both the audience and jury at AFO. A truly special festival and a week I’ll never forget!!

MOVIE REVIEW
Phenomena
NR - 3 out of 5 stars

Genre: Documentary, Experimental, Science
Year Released: 2026
Runtime: 1h 26m
Director(s): Josef Gatti
Where to Watch: shown at the 2026 True/False Film Festival, and Copenhagen International Documentary Festival (CPH:DOX)

RAVING REVIEW: A film about the universe should make you feel small. PHENOMENA understands that instinct, but what makes it fascinating is the way it chooses to get there. Instead of relying on CGI or traditional scientific exposition, filmmaker Josef Gatti builds the entire experience through physical experimentation, capturing real-world interactions directly through the camera. The result is often breathtaking, occasionally hypnotic, and sometimes frustratingly distant.

The premise is simple. Gatti and his father, a retired physics teacher, begin exploring natural phenomena through a series of experiments that translate invisible forces into visual form. Electricity, magnetism, vibration, light, and chemical reactions all become the raw material for the film’s imagery. Many of these sequences resemble something you might expect from a psychedelic art installation. Yet, the film repeatedly reminds viewers that every pattern, burst of color, and fluid motion comes from real physical processes captured.

That commitment to authenticity is one of the film’s most compelling qualities. PHENOMENA doesn’t fake its sense of wonder. The visuals emerge directly from carefully constructed experiments designed to reveal how energy behaves. The film moves through ten loosely structured chapters, beginning with more familiar concepts like light and gradually expanding toward increasingly abstract ideas.

When the film actively engages with those ideas, it becomes mesmerizing. Watching ferrofluids ripple across magnetic fields or crystalline structures forming under shifting conditions carries an undeniable sense of discovery. These moments feel like peeking behind the curtain of the universe, glimpsing the mechanisms that quietly shape reality at scales we rarely consider...

🎬️ Phenomena

This week is ‘Reading Break’ for the Forest Technology students at Vancouver Island University and it has become somewhat of a tradition to head out for a hike in some old growth forest during this break in classes. Today we were exploring a grove of ancient giants in the Nahmint Valley where we wandered beneath towering Douglas-fir, majestic Bigleaf Maple, some surprisingly large Black Cottonwood, and many Western Redcedar. And what would a day in the Nahmint be without capping it off with a visit to the Alberni Giant? This was the first time most of these students had ventured into the Nahmint Valley, and to a person, all vowed to make it the first of many....such is the spell this valley will cast over you! #nahmintvalley #portalberni #vancouverislanduniversity #foresttech #oldgrowth #bigtrees #ancientforests #vancouverisland #albernigiant

"What is it REALLY like to be a trans young person in Australia today? We’re so, SO honoured to present a new series that truly spotlights and amplifies the experiences of trans young people.

📹🌈 Introducing Unerased, a new series for Instagram and TikTok, directed by @appobjoy 🎬

Over 17 glorious, heartfelt, heartbreaking, funny and euphoric episodes, you’ll hear the stories of nine trans and gender diverse Australian teenagers finishing their last years of high school.

So often, we hear adults, politicians and leaders speaking about, for, or on behalf of young people – but the voices of young people are conspicuously absent from these conversations.

Here, we hear FROM trans young people. They’ll take the camera and invite you into their lives, their homes and their schools as they navigate their own gender and identity journeys.

✨ And the first episode drops Sunday August 20 RIGHT HERE on our Insta!!! ✨

We can’t wait for you to meet these nine young people and hear their stories. Get ready for Unerased! 🌈🏳️‍⚧️

Word is finally out! I’m producing the documentary series Unerased with the talented director AP Pobjoy. This has been a year and a half in the making, and very soon you’ll get to see it. It’s for young people, filmed by young people, diving into the lives of those who are often spoken about but not listened to. We couldn’t have done this without the generous support from Screen Australia and VicScreen.
