Artwork by @mashushka for our 30th Anniversary Book, 'What Happened'

To celebrate this milestone, we asked the Artists to create images inspired by a significant event from one year between 1994 and 2025. Some chose to illustrate historical moments or public events; others looked inward, drawing on memories or fleeting personal experiences. Together, these images form a kind of visual timeline — not linear or definitive, but intimate and subjective. They reveal the singular talents and distinct perspectives of each of the Artists at Heart.

Masha Krasnova Shabaeva created an artwork for 1994, capturing her memory of ‘Listening to a bootleg copy of Blur’s newly released album, Parklife, back in my hometown of Ufa, Russia.’

Blur fans out there will spot the nod to Parklife's iconic album cover.

🖊 From Paper to Skin: Why are Illustrators becoming Tattoo Artists? - An article written by Masha Krasnova-Shabaeva @mashushka

Taking inspiration from illustration and tattooing, more illustrators are combining the two in their work, enriching both fields. While it may feel like it’s a recent trend, at least in the Western world, this is only partly true. Tattoos, once considered taboo for centuries, slowly became mainstream, with a sharp rise in popularity during the 20th century. Among other factors, the rise of counterculture and its influence on the mainstream helped demonstrate that being tattooed is socially acceptable. Over the years, tattoos have undergone a major transformation and not only just for people wanting art on their bodies—they’ve become a recognised form of visual art. Today, it’s common to see works by famous tattoo artists sold at auctions or featured in large coffee table books. So, why not try entering this fascinating and inspiring new field?

Featuring interviews with artists Ellie McGuinness @suck_ants / @leavethegates, Marije Maria @_marijemaria / @marijemaria.tattoos and Masha Zotova @moominmasha

I never could have imagined I would be organizing and curating a festival! Together with @carmenjose_work and @rachelsenderw we worked on setting this up for more than a year! And last weekend it became a reality! Our very own ROTTERDAM ILLUSTRATION FESTIVAL @rdamillufest

To be honest, still recovering from it! Such an amazing crowd of people in a sold out Roodkapje! Workshops, talks, screen print exhibition, live drawing, speeddating….. what a party it was!

Thanks to the illustration community for the good vibes! Twas magic! ❤️🫶

Whilst curating and organizing the first edition of ROTTERDAM ILLUSTRATION FESTIVAL with Rachel Sender & Carmen José I came up with the plan to commission five illustrators to make an illustration where they could experiment and play loosely around the theme of community. I would then screen print all prints on 70x100 cm paper. Mostly two layers, some had three layers.

Thanks to the amazing illustrators for making such beautiful work that I then could print by hand. Feast for the eyes! Sore muscles for sure! Thanks @mashushka @xavieraaltena @cesdavolio @johan__kleinjan & @ilseweisfelt

Loads of hours, lots of sweat and tears! ❤️ gotta love print!

Thanks @speedball_art @vanbeekartsupplies & @gerstaecker_nl ❤️

'For many older adults, combating isolation, and its effects on physical health, is a challenge — especially at senior living communities. Virtual reality offers a surprising solution: not only as a door to new experiences, but as a point of real-world connection. Older adults are embarking on shared V.R. adventures - sunset cruises, European tours, nature hikes — designed to spark joy, start conversations and encourage social bonding.'
