POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

There is something undeniably significant about sharing your art in a space specially crafted to ensuring that our stories live long after we depart.

On Sunday, October 11, 2026, I had the honor of partaking in the National Library of Jamaica’s 22nd Legal Deposit Anniversary celebration held at The Ministry Of Culture in Kingston.

I performed "Black Woman" as part of the official programme and returned to the stage with "Nuff Man" as a brawta. The receptiveness and enthusiasm of the audience made both performances especially memorable.

Another special moment was seeing my short poetry film "Bird Shooting" screened publicly as part of the celebration. The film has been officially inducted into the National Library of Jamaica’s Legal Deposit collection, and its overwhelmingly positive reception meant a whole lot to me. I'm thankful to the gifted team of creatives Anthony Roberts, Delbert Cespedes, O'Maro Bekelé and Massy The Creator without whom the project wouldn't have seen the light of day.

As a polymath who engages in work across poetry, photography and film, it is deeply gratifying to know that "Bird Shooting" now forms part of Jamaica’s preserved creative record.

I take great pride in knowing that we also shot this project in my parish, Manchester. The written version of the poem also secured second place in the National Library of Jamaica’s Poet Laureate Competition under the Louise Bennett Coverly Prize category which is specifically for poets from my region of our island. Also repping Manchester was was none other than the phenomenalJamaican Pencil Chef herself Oneica Gayle as our hostess.

I must express sincere thanks to the National Library of Jamaica for the invitation, the warm reception and the amazing opportunity to share my work on an occasion devoted to preserving and protecting our stories for future generations to enjoy.

A special thank you to Ms. Francina Francis for helping me through the process of getting my project into their archives and also to our National Librarian Ms. Beverly Lashley for her initiative, generosity and advocacy.

Birdshooting — A Conversation on Conservation 🐦📸🌿 August 20,2026

Weeks later, I'm still reflecting with gratitude on Bird Shooting's Media Launch held at the Department of Life Sciences, UWI Mona.

What began as a poem grew into a poetry film, and then into a room filled with poets, conservationists, creatives, friends and supporters engaging in meaningful conversation around Jamaica's birds, biodiversity and our relationship with the natural world.

Deepest gratitude to our partners and collaborators BirdLife Jamaica, CLEW Jamaica, Jaiku Poetry, ATR Video, Xgzartz/Dragonfleye Drone Services, Bekelé Studios and Massy The Creator, and to the UWI Department of Life Sciences for hosting us.
Special thanks to our moderator Paula-Anne Porter-Jones, our host Dionne Davis, and our panelists Damion "Rooster" Whyte, Justin Saunders and Nicholas Lee.

And gratitude to everyone who came out and gave the evening its energy: Marlon Thompson, Shannon Chensee, Diana Williams, Javoniel Trowers, Fabian Smith, Delbert Cespedes, Michael Edwards, Doris Gross, Carlyn Thompson, Osheen Wright,Jahleel Beal, Kacy Garvey, Dujan Crossfield, Ian Gage, Michelle Roberts, Marguerite Anderson, Anthony Roberts and Zavaar Walker.

Every person who attended, shared the film, offered encouragement, participated in the conversation or helped bring this project to life has my sincere thanks. Birdshooting was self-financed, but it was never a solitary undertaking. Collaboration gave it wings. 🐦🌿

Birdshooting is a project that arrives in the world through the spirit of collaboration. Primary filming took place in Bellfield, Manchester on Labor Day May 25,2026.

The poem itself explores how we can shoot birds in a non-lethal fashion rather than in a destructive manner. It challenges us to question how we interact with these beautiful creatures in our environment. It also arrives at a critical moment as Bird Shooting Season officially opens on Saturday August 22,2026.

On March 21,2026 (World Poetry Day) the poem "Birdshooting" received a second place award from the National Library Of Jamaica in the Louise Bennett Coverly Prize category of their Poet Laureate competition.

"Birdshooting" Recording Session

From ideation to creation. Such is the magical alchemy of artistry. I give maximum respect and thanks to the impressively talented and accomplished creatives I have the honor of collaborating with along this journey.

It is indeed a joy to craft word, power and sound with O'Maro Bekelé @bekele_studios and Massy The Creator @massy_thecreator. Much gratitude to my Jaiku Poetry @jaikupoetry brother @xgzabeher for the support of documenting the session and adding invaluable input to help elevate the expression and message that shall soon grace the world.

The journey of a poem doesn't have to end with the period at the lower corner of the page. This piece shall take three-dimensional shape and find itself beckoned on stages. I'm excited to share the evolution of the work with you all. Stay tuned!
