Recently, I had the opportunity to attend an exhibition featuring the work of Detroit artist Darian Greer (@master.greer), as well as a screening of Laughing & Crying in the Reign, a short film co-directed by Darian and Jason Johnson (@rckbny) exploring Darian's life and creative process. One thing I really appreciated about the experience was Darian's openness in sharing how the different experiences in his life have shaped him and his art. As an artist myself, I also appreciated getting a glimpse into his creative process and being reminded that creating isn't always a linear experience. Darian's paintings combine portraiture with celestial imagery, and I was particularly moved by a portrait of his brother. It brought to mind Carl Sagan's words, "We are made of star stuff." There's something comforting to me about the idea that we're all part of something much bigger than ourselves, connected through the very things that make up our universe. Something else that stayed with me was Darian's invitation for viewers to bring their own experiences and interpretations to his artwork. I appreciated that freedom, but I also found that learning about his experiences through Darian and Jason's film and hearing him speak made seeing the paintings even more meaningful. I'm grateful I had the opportunity to experience his work in so many different ways. Thank you, Darian and Jason, for sharing your creativity and giving us a glimpse into the experiences and processes behind the art.

“ I rarely show the beginning stages, if any part of the production process, of my work. The beginning stages are usually the roughest to looking, and where things feel the hardest or the most undone. Instead of harboring, that part of the process for myself, it’s been my mission throughout this showing to share that magic with whoever cares.” Darian Saint Greer, painter and storyteller is currently in residency at The Raw Space (@rawspc) on Detroit Westside until 2027! On view is his latest body of work, “ laughing, and crying in the reign!” Saint Greer is using this time to finish one of the staple pieces of the show! If you’d like to stop by and see the work or see Saint Greer in action, you can either contact The Raw Space or Darian himself 🥂 #art #fineart #storytelling #detroit

I attended this month's CreativeMornings Detroit at Eastern Market After Dark and it was wonderful. I look forward to attending them each month, but this one was especially great. There was great food, entertainment, and people that made the evening special. Definitely swipe through and see what made it special. Also shout out to @brittneybhayden for freestyling that whole song based off of topics from the audience. So much talent in the room that night!

Detroit after dark. A little street photography. A little elegance. Art, architecture, memory, and people sharing the same space. A few weeks ago, I photographed Where We Belong: The Architecture of Home, an exhibition exploring home, identity, and belonging through the work of Black Detroit artists. Inside, the architecture became part of the exhibition. Art moved across walls and surfaces, transforming an intricately designed office into a place for stories of Black memory, strength, resilience, and belonging. I was invited by artist @qianam , whose work felt familiar to me. Her practice explores healing by peeling back layers of trauma, gathering fragments of memory, and piecing them together into a story you can reclaim as your own. I also connected deeply with her use of materials and multimedia. Curator @hannahlarae brought it all together beautifully. Nothing felt forced. The work belonged to the space, and somehow the space belonged to the work. People lingered. They looked closer. They talked. They felt. That is what stayed with me. Congratulations to every artist represented and to everyone who created such a peaceful and respectful place for these stories to live. These are my black-and-white renditions of the experience. Where We Belong: The Architecture of Home. @abayomidet Detroit. At night. Art where it belongs. #DetroitArt #BlackArtists #DetroitPhotography #BlackAndWhitePhotography #WhereWeBelong

Opening night was only the beginning. Over the last ten days, Where We Belong has brought us together through art, memory and a shared question: Who gets to call Detroit home? Today is your final opportunity to experience the exhibition. Join us for Family Portrait Day from 1–5 PM with portraits by Rowan Minor, followed by our Closing Salon from 7–10 PM—with dinner, sounds by DJ Al Ester, illustrations by Gil Ashby and Darius Baber, artists in the room and a silent auction benefiting Abayomi’s Community Homeownership Fund. Come see the work. Meet the artists. And perhaps take a piece of Where We Belong home with you. 📍3939 Woodward Ave., Suite 100
