We are excited to announce the inaugural VSU Percussion Festival happening April 3rd, 2027! The festival will feature HS Solo and Ensemble performances with clinician and adjudicator feedback, HS and Collegiate I&E Competition, masterclasses, and collegiate ensembles.

There will be clinics and performances from:
the Blank Canvas Percussion Duo, Dr. Donnie Johns, Shawn David Hall, Justin Johnson, Marcia McCants, Dr. Ethan Strickland, and the Mid-Eastern Percussion Association.

The VSU Percussion Ensemble will close out the day performing works of Chris Thompson, including a world premiere!

💚💛 VIVO | MASON WIND SYMPHONY AT VMEA 2026

Alive. Vibrant. In motion.

This November, experience VIVO as the Mason Wind Symphony takes the stage under the direction of Dr. William L. Lake, Jr., at the 2026 Virginia Music Educators Association Professional Development Conference.

From exhilarating rhythmic energy to moments of reflection, memory, and profound expression, VIVO explores what it means for music to feel fully alive, brought to life through the extraordinary colors, voices, and possibilities of the modern wind ensemble.

Featuring music by Zhou Tian, Stacy Garrop, Viet Cuong, Will Healy, and James David, the Mason Wind Symphony is joined by an exceptional group of guest artists. Dr. LaToya A. Webb, Interim Director of Bands at Ball State University and Mason alumna (MM Conducting, 2017), returns to the podium as guest conductor, while Dr. Connor Mikula, Mason Applied Professor of Saxophone, joins the ensemble as featured soloist. The program also features Mrs. Adiza Jibril-Gustama, vocalist, and Mr. Christopher L. Thompson, emcee, in an encore Mason’s consortium-partner performance of Will Healy’s Noctuary for Adé.

Together, these artists and the Mason Wind Symphony bring VIVO to life in a performance celebrating energy, artistry, storytelling, and the powerful connections music creates.

"Merging and combining genre in a genuine and authentic way is not easy, as it requires a deep respect, understanding, and reverence of the styles involved, but if done correctly, it can be a key to increase diversity and representation within classical music."

I CARE IF YOU LISTEN contributor Katie Brown sits down with the percussionist and composer Christopher Thompson for 5 Questions interview, exploring genre and the composer's vision of classical music. Visit our website to read the full interview!
