CAMPERS. A group show curated by Hank Reavis and Bergen Hendrickson at Seattle’s Georgetown Steamplant. Featuring 23 artists, this exhibition draws together work to reexamine a period of improvised and unconventional spaces in Seattle’s recent history, which the show dubs “Campsite DIY.” The final open hours are this weekend, with a closing reception on Sunday the 20th from 5-8pm.

Hunter Ney: Community Memory is presented by Whaam!

Community Memory offers eight new works, rendered in acrylic and gouache on paper. Ney explores personal memory, others’ perceived memory and how they can compound on one another, forming a chain connection. The works have a deeply personal, oneiric feel, like the last glimmer of a dream as it slips from memory. There is something there, a connection is being made, but it is fleeting. His work takes us to a place where we feel familiar, while at the same time confronted by the pangs of memories abstracted and out of reach. –Malcolm Kenter

Community Memory offers eight new works by New York based artist Hunter Ney, rendered in acrylic and gouache on paper. Ney explores personal memory, others’ perceived memory and how they can compound on one another, forming a chain connection. The works have a deeply personal, oneiric feel, like the last glimmer of a dream as it slips from memory. There is something there, a connection is being made, but it is fleeting. His work takes us to a place where we feel familiar, while at the same time confronted by the pangs of memories abstracted and out of reach.

The title of the show Community Memory is a reference to a short-lived computer system from Berkeley, California, which existed between 1973 and 1975 as the first public online bulletin board used for sharing information about art, business, and social organizing. It was an optimistic system carrying the values of 1960’s Bay Area counterculture. Ney repurposes the name “Community Memory” to reflect his paintings: the community he depicts, of which he is a member and spectator, and the memory he trusts to guide him through it. - Malcolm Kenter
