Last month, Canadian hip-hop lost one of its longest-running programs on community radio. For 35 years, #TheMasterplanShow (later rebranded to #GenerationNext) was a weekly outlet for hip-hop fans. But when the news broke that the Generation Next show had been cancelled, listeners were left with a lot of questions. Today on Commotion, culture critic @daltonhiggins5 tells @elamin what the cancellation could signal about the future of hip-hop on Canada’s community radio airwaves.

SIGN THE PETITION NOW! CIUT just cancelled Canada’s longest-running Hip-Hop show; and the community isn’t staying quiet. From breaking Wu-Tang exclusives to giving Kardinal his first spin, @masterplanshow (now called Generation Next) kept Toronto’s heartbeat thumping for 35+ years. Now it’s fighting for survival after a sudden shut-off over “profanity.” Why does this matter? Because Hip-Hop has always been an archive, a newswire, and memory. Cutting the mic erases more than music. Swipe to see what founders, key figures, and artists had to say, then hit the PETITION linked in the article or at @philipvalino’s profile. Supporters can also write to CIUT and the CBSC urging mediation over erasure; or post their favorite Canadian Hip-Hop artist with the hashtag #GenerationNext and #TheMasterplanShow to amplify awareness.
