$Focus Programme WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT… VENEZUELA Saturday, 30 May / 18:45 / Kijkhuis 2 / + introduction by El Guayabo 116 min. Since the beginning of this year, Venezuela has been in the news following Donald Trump’s violation of international law through the abduction of dictator Nicolás Maduro. Not only does this discourse sometimes sideline the prolonged economic and humanitarian collapse that preceded it—if only the outrage had been just as present at the time—but it also often obscures the personal, everyday lives unfolding beyond the headlines. For years, this country and its capital, Caracas, have been a stage of mass departure. Co-curated with El Guayabo (@enguayabado_), a young collective of friends and filmmakers living through this in a formative period of their lives, this programme comprises deeply personal stories on an intergenerational trajectory between staying behind, saying goodbye, leaving, letting go, the enduring question of return, and an ever-changing relationship to the motherland. ‘Mixtape of Exile’, one of El Guayabo’s earliest works, invites us into a loving friend group, both youthful and heavy with sorrow. On the rooftops of Caracas, they raise a bittersweet toast to those who stay behind in what is starting to feel like an empty country. Several years later, in ‘Last Seen, Long Time Ago’, director Santiago Martín (@ssssssantiiiii) moves through that same city, now caught in a dream-like limbo between distraction and the absence left by a departing love. With ‘This Is Not My Kingdom’, director Diego Murillo (@diego_soce) shifts the perspective outward: in New York City, he assembles a fractured sense of home through kitchen labour, voice messages, and fleeting exchanges shaped by distance. Finally, in ‘Instructions for Staring at the Mirror’, director Edgar Jorge Baralt (@edgar_jorge_baralt) finds echoes of Venezuela in the landscapes of Southern California. Geography serves as a trigger for the past to quietly circulate, almost as if returning, but without ever fully arriving. [caption continued in comments] —— Leiden Shorts ‘26 May 29 → June 02$
