In honor of AAPI Heritage Month, we’d like to present “Seen and Heard,” a mini documentary revolving around our cultivating relationship with the Pasifika Club of Archbishop Riordan HS.

We interviewed three people from the Pasifika Club– Judah Taione and Mata Masoli, both student leaders, and Lee Mauga, the club advisor– about how the Pasifika Club has made them feel safe to express their cultural identity at Riordan, a private Catholic school where Pacific Islanders are the minority. “Seen and Heard” entails how the club started for the purpose of Pasifika students on campus being “seen and heard” beyond negative stereotypes, as well as how we got involved.

Also spotlighted is the school’s Cultural Night, a yearly celebration held on campus that allows the Pasifika Club to showcase their mission. In their excitement for the event, they faced challenges such as balancing their time with academics, sports, and family, loss of loved ones, a shutdown due to a tuberculosis outbreak, etc.

Despite these tribulations, the students continued to show up for one another, highlighting a key factor in their maintenance and healing of mental health and wellness that we were both able to witness and partake in— community 🌱
