🍄 New “We Present” video of the projects made by our students! In this one, Alexandra D’Oliveira, talks about her project “Living Seams” for the Master in Design through New Materials. The project is a stool made from waste materials bound together with mycelium, the vegetative part of fungi, which consists of a network of microscopic filaments. This process gives waste materials a second life by transforming them into functional furniture. Excited to share that my paper, Cementing the gap: boundary conditions as a studio strategy for teaching MICP, has now been published in Biotechnology Design. This work grew out of a module I made for the @cocoon.bio EU funded project into two workshops with MA Design Through New Materials students @materialdesigners at @elisava.school of Design and Engineering. The paper looks at how MICP, a process usually framed through laboratory protocols, sterility and optimisation, can instead be introduced as something designers can engage with through making. The workshops focused on how mould design, permeability and material choice shape microbial mineralisation. Rather than trying to control the biological process completely, the students designed the conditions in which it could unfold. Their experiments, observations, failures and reflections were central to developing the Boundary Conditions Framework presented in the paper. A very big thank you to Laura Freixas and all the students who took part across the 2024 and 2025 workshops that helped shape the work through their experimentation, observations and reflections: Anna Lazzaron, Zi Bardi Riera, Chi-Yueh Tan, Giulia De Franco, Guido Gorletta, He Chang, Rosana Alcidia Gomes De Sousa and Sineray Serin, Alexandra D’Oliveira, Baibua Nilsaard, Camilla Salinas Rivera, Chiao-Chi Hsu, Isis Abouda, Magdalena Muñoz García, Margherita Balossi Restelli, Martina Gerardi, Matthew Puth, Pei-Ling Jian, Taylor Seamans, Vaani Kumar and Ya-Chi Chen. I will be presenting this work next month at the Biodesign Conference at TU Delft, and I am very much looking forward to continuing the conversation there.

Reel 1 - Travertine: A Stone Shaped by Water and Time Travertine is a chemical sedimentary limestone, formed through the precipitation of calcium carbonate near springs and waterfalls. Its layered structure preserves thousands of years of geological history, making every slab a unique and unrepeatable piece. Its signature feature is its porosity: the characteristic holes and cavities are not imperfections, but the result of natural processes that occurred during sedimentation, including trapped gases and organic matter incorporated during the stone’s formation. Its three-dimensional depth absorbs and refracts light in a soft and diffused way, creating warm, tactile surfaces with a softer appearance compared to the sharper reflections of compact marbles. #Travertine #NaturalStone #ArchitectureMaterials #InteriorDesign #Materiality

pH-responsive alginate hydrogel with anthocyanins say whaaat? anthocyanins are molecules whose structure shifts when the pH changes… thus, changing the way it absorbs light, making us perceive different colors 🤓 we extracted them from red cabbage and mixed the extract with a sodium alginate + H₂O solution. then we pushed the mixture through a syringe into a CaCl₂ bath…cue ionic crosslinking. The result: hydrogels soft, squishy, crosslinked 3D polymer networks that absorb and hold lots of water, while exhibiting a clear, reversible color response to pH changes Feeling incredibly happy to guide my students from the Master in Design through New Materials at @elisava.school on turning scientific research into a beautiful and tangible experiment!! ✨

🧬 The students of the Master in Design through New Materials attended a workshop titled ‘Low-tech prototyping with cellulose’ led by Jannis Schäfer (@j.chefer). The students developed low-tech prototyping methods and simple DIY approaches to build tools and set up processes with cellulose-based materials, understanding how the process itself can guide design as a starting point and ongoing influence. 🧵 Students of the Master in Design through New Materials attended a workshop titled ‘Neo-craftmanship and biotextiles’ led by Larisa Esparza (@franca.objetoutil @larisa.esparza) and Paco Tostado (@yotostado #). The workshop explored transdisciplinary design by integrating ancestral processes, science and technology, combining digital processes with craft techniques to personalise biotextiles with plant fibres. Organised by Laura Freixas (@_organicmatters), director of the Master in Design through New Materials. #Elisava #Design #Biotextiles #Craft #TransdisciplinaryDesign
