As part of my artists residency @nesartistresidency in Skagaströnd, Iceland, I was able to document @sarah_thibault plein air painting.

Here is a little clip of her hiking back during a midnights session with her oil painting, on the cliffs of Skagaströnd. In the distance the majestic Westfjords emerge from the arctic sea.

From Sarah’s mission statement:

“Inspired by Ragnar Kjartansson’s performance of exreme landscape painting in the Icelandic lava fields, I created the series of paitings with the impulse to continue the conversation started by these plein air painters, but with the intent to reframe it from a feminist lens.

During my painting sessions, the weather was cold (between 0-6c) the wind was strong, and the birds flying overhead were loud. But rather than attempting to conquer the land through an act of brute force like Kjaransson in the iconic image of him, I approach these painting sessions as a way fo connect with the land and to pay homage to it - which I see as an essential aspect of challenging traditional patriarchal and colonial narratives.”

In this week's "Where We Work", we get a glimpse into some art studios in Los Angeles and San Francisco. Check out the link in our bio to read the full article!⠀⠀⠀

Sarah Thibault (@sarah_thibault) is a painter working out of her art studio in San Francisco. ⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
“I usually go to my studio in the morning after doing an hour of writing or doing some work on my computer. I try not to use my studio space for anything other than making work. Once I get going on a painting, I try to go for at least an hour or two before taking a break to go on a walk around the neighborhood or grab refreshments" - Sarah⠀⠀

László Bolender (@laszlobolender) is a musician and visual artist working from his home music and art studio in Los Angeles.⠀
⠀⠀⠀
"My space has to be comfortable, so I have different places where I can sit and space to lie down on the floor. The main room contains various pieces of audio equipment and computers, which I use for music and art." - László⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
...⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀
Meryl (@meryljac) is a video editor working out of her edit bay in Los Angeles.⠀
⠀⠀
"I arrive in my edit bay each morning, settle in, brew some coffee, and review my “To Do” list. My edit bay is my happy place. I keep it neat, clean and organized. What guides my mindset each day is a sense of dedication and enthusiasm. I find post-production fascinating, and editing especially so because of the combination of creative and technical skills that editors need to master the craft, as well as the continuous dazzling technical advances in my field." - Meryl⠀

This episode we hear from artist and writer Sarah Thibault who accumulated six figures worth of debt after attending a private art school (that is now closing) and then graduate school at California College of the Arts where she received her MFA in Painting.

After graduate school she worked at a number of jobs outside her field to help pay off her loans and credit card debt, but despite her efforts ended up missing six monthly payments. Years later when she was able to take bigger strides to improve her financial health, she discovered that those six late payments translated to 48 marks on her credit score.
Sarah shares her decision to ultimately leave the 9-5 corporate world to travel to artist residencies in Europe and Mexico where she worked remotely as a Marketing Specialist for a cannabis start-up in the Bay Area for two years. Now back in the US, she has a new perspective towards money and debt, and is able to stay (relatively) positive despite her financial limitations.

Sarah Thibault is the artist and writer whose current solo exhibition “Winter Woods”, on view at Fahrenheit Madrid, inspired the theme of our 21st October event The Art of Self Care. She has written art criticism as well as creative non-fiction stories exploring life in San Francisco, female troubles, failed attempts at spirituality, and solo female travel. She's currently working on her first memoir about living as an artist nomad for two years. You can find out more about Sarah and our other speakers as well as get tickets to the event at the link in our bio!
