Carillon Frères, 2023 Puligny-Montrachet Noyer Bret

Carillon Frères is the exciting new project of Paul and Mathis Carillon, the sons of François Carillon. I spoke with Nicklas from Rarité about their wines and had to get one when the chance struck. With a production of only 1800 bottles this won’t be that easy to find. Being from one of Puligny’s most respected winemaking families, the brothers are already carving out an identity of their own. Their wines feel unmistakably modern, embracing reduction, precision, and tension.

The village cuvée Noyer Bret showcases that philosophy. The nose is driven by struck match reduction, intertwined with citrus, grapefruit pith, fresh ginger, and grated nutmeg. The reduction is prominent but beautifully judged, acting as another layer of complexity rather than masking the fruit.

The palate combines ripe citrus fruit with impressive energy. There is an attractive generosity to the wine, yet it never loses its composure. Ginger spices carries through onto the finish, accompanied by mineral tension and a subtle spice from the oak that is seamlessly integrated.

What impressed me most was the balance. The wine manages to combine the elegance and precision one expects from Puligny with a satisfying sense of width and texture. It is a difficult equilibrium to achieve, but Carillon Frères pull it off remarkably well.

The combination of reduction, purity, and controlled ripeness inevitably brings to mind domaines such as Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey, yet the wine doesn’t seek to copy anything. There is already a distinct confidence to the style.

If this is the level of the village wines, the future of Carillon Frères looks bright. I need to try out the 1er cru cuvée loulou which is a blend of 1er crus.

Really good for a change! Not used to this peated expression in Yamazaki. I’ve found it pretty integrated and far from overwhelming. Lower alcohol feel compared to the Puncheon. One of the good cuvées of the Tsukuriwake 2022 series.

Cheers @juliendir ❤️🍼

A nice bottle from @domainefrancoiscarillon to finish our July tasting in Lyon, always happy to drink their wines. In the craziness of Burgundy, Carillon keeps offering a very good QPR. Even this Puligny village is already very representative of the estate know-how and terroir.

At almost 10 years of age, this bottle behaves more than well. Generous and open already, it did not take long to get it ready for business in our glasses. The nose shows good fruit, mostly yellow, with intermediate ripeness, and a slight toasted character. The oak is well integrated overall. Slight mineral touch (rocky) and more nuts and ham fat. 2014 is always a bit special in my opinion, and it doesn’t fully unveils its potential. This one however, seems to be more transparent for immediate enjoyment.

The palate is also fruit oriented and shows good energy. Rather salivating with good acidity, it is still fresh and young. Texture is soft with a touch of fat, but remains agile and fluid. Medium concentration. More nuts and rocks in here. Good length. It is drinking well now but the palate could benefit from 2-3 additional years or cellaring to unwind a bit more.

Thanks @mathiscarillon and @fils_carillon for sharing this nice bottle. Cheers and see you soon!
