Damascus, In Bloom (دِمَشْقُ تُزْهِرُ) A digital collage reimagining The Road to Damascus, a May 2009 fashion story by @britishvogue, through contemporary Syrian eyes… 🌞🌾🌺🪻🍊🇸🇾 Archival fashion imagery meets Syria’s redesigned 2026 banknotes, where botanical and agricultural motifs replace oppressive rulers and political power, and the country’s visual symbolism shifts toward environmental flourishing, shared prosperity, and cultural optimism. At the bottom centre, a luminous figure steps forward, symbolising the act of entering a reawakened Damascus. Sunlit tones, natural motifs, and layered symmetry evoke a Syria both remembered and becoming, where memory meets renewal. A Damascus imagined not as it was, but as it blooms. 💛 Special thanks to @byrawaatalass for her insightful article. Audio: “In Damascus” by Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish.

Joumana Bayazid El Husseini is among the most distinctive voices in twentieth century Lebanese art. She was born in Jerusalem to a prominent Palestinian family and later became based in Beirut, where she developed a language of remarkable invention, combining flat planes of colour with intricate architectural detail drawn from Islamic visual traditions. Jerusalem, painted in 1967, is a work of exceptional poignancy. Created in the aftermath of the Six-Day War, it maps the holy city as a layered accumulation of domes, arches, and towers, their forms compressed into a vertical field that reads as both cityscape and iconography. Gold leaf animates the surface, pressing against drawn lines with a precision that speaks of deep familiarity and deep longing. The year of the painting is not incidental: it is a work made at the moment of loss, where the city it depicts is held closely. How did women work, create, and live in the Lebanese Civil War? April marks the breakout of the 1975 Lebanese War, a harrowing episode that still haunts the country’s present, perhaps even more so in these dark days. Today we share with you an exceptional text of oral history exploring artistic labor by women during the Lebanese Civil War. The chapters in “Women’s War Stories: The Lebanese Civil War, Women’s Labor, and the Creative Arts” offer firsthand accounts of women’s experiences in social, artistic, and labor spheres as well as many examples of their creative responses to the Lebanese Civil War. This collection of pieces, edited by Michelle Hartman and Malek Abisaab, engages art—widely conceived—and labor, and spans further topics as well, particularly how women’s work and labor are thought about. Read the interview with the editors on Jadaliyya.com Featured artwork by Seta Manoukian, Tagreed Darghouth, and Samar Mogharbel.
