4 years ago today @pedrolara.coach wrapped a blue belt around me. I had no idea what I was in for. I was just happy to have a colored belt. In the last 4 years I have gotten frustrated, been injured, lost many matches, lost some friends and been let down by other friends, and I’m sure I’ve let others down, battled depression, and almost quit jiu jitsu entirely. However in those same 4 years I have made new friends that I now call family, reconnected with lost friends, gained new perspectives on things, learned to be kinder to others, learned to be kinder to myself, spent more time on the mats than I ever expected, I have trained with some legends in bjj, made a stronger bond with all my daughters❤️, and most importantly, I feel like I’ve grown as a father, husband, son and martial artist ( I feel funny calling myself that 😂). @matosbjj26 has welcomed me like a family member and I can’t be more proud to be back in the Checkmat family. I’m even more honored that a belt that started under my good friend and brother @pedrolara.coach will be completed under @jacksonmatosbjj 🔥 @mentality_martial_arts @bullymenowmma @charlesharriott @ckmacmccarthy and @abraaobambaoamorim have quietly been the driving force behind my jiu jitsu for the past 4 years and I can’t thank them all enough. I honestly don’t think I would have made it this far and have the accomplishments I’ve had at blue belt without them. To say I’m grateful for them is an understatement. So I guess I got a little long winded but truly I don’t have the room to thank everyone that has helped me along the way. My friends, my family, my teammates, and definitely my opponents, thank you 🙏 To the ones not with us anymore, we will roll again one day ❤️

These two right here. If you know my wife, you know she doesn’t even like being outside 😂. And my youngest daughter is one of the kindest people you’ll ever meet off the mat—but on the mat, she’s a savage.
6 a.m. practices, two-a-days, going after work or school, and sometimes doing both. The dedication, discipline is next level
You guys deserve this promotion. Couldn’t be prouder ❤️🥋 Eleanor solid gray, @coco_ses 2ed strip on her white belt

Success is built through consistency, discipline, and heart. Our kids train hard, push their limits, and never stop learning. But just as important, they laugh, support each other, and enjoy every moment on the mats. Focus, discipline, and fun. The perfect balance and the secret to our success.
