SPIRIT OF INDIGO - IN THE CARDAMOM HILLS
In the midst of large tea plantations in the Cardamom Hills, Munnar, Kerala, India, Ratna Krishna, supported by the Srishti Trust TATA Global Beverages Limited, created Aranya Natural in 1994.
🌿
The idea grew out of a need to educate and train the differently abled children of Munnar’s tea plantation workers. Graduates of these programs had few opportunities for employment in the area, however, and would need to migrate to the plains to find work. After some research, it was found that no organization in India had immersed itself in natural dyeing in an environmentally friendly way. It was decided to build a model for eco-friendly, high-quality and well-paid work in naturally dyed textiles.
🌿💙
Today, one can find a large, airy facility is surrounded by greenhouses and large fields of flowers and tea. The plants used for natural dyeing are cultivated and picked right on site.
When it comes to the art of natural dyeing, the work of Ratna and Aranya has become a focal point not only in India but for the world. Textile artists, fashion icons and chemists such as Yoshiko Iwamoto Wada, Axel Becker, Dominique Cardon, Michel Garcia, buaisou, Linda Labelle make regular pilgrimages here for workshops and training in shibori, indigo, batik, tie-dye, and block or mordant printing.

We are honored and happy by working with @aranya.natural and @ratnakrishnakumar

MUSTANG, NEPAL SEPTEMBER 2022
Mustang—that legendary region in northern Nepal, long closed to visitors. The trip we took in September four years ago opened our eyes and minds in ways that have stayed with us ever since.
We visited yak herds and shepherds, the pashmina settlements, and the main town of Lo Manthang at an altitude of 4,000 meters... we experienced village life—weaving, cooking, and moving the animals every morning and evening.

Our heart is with the people of Nepal.❤️

Thanks for all help

FROM NATURE, BY HAND - HIMALAYA- STOCKHOLM
People, genuine craftsmanship and original Himalayan, Indian materials.
Everything created by hand by local artisans in wild silk, yak wool, sheep wool, pashmina, linen and organic cotton.
Dyed with natural indigo, eucalyptus, walnuts, tea, flowers, leaves, bark, herbs and other natural extracts.
Nature’s own elements spun, weaved and dyed by hand gives each of our products a very special and unique feeling. This is of course more time consuming and extensive than fast fashion industry processes, but we want to contribute to a new environmental mindset where craftsmanship can take its time.
Together with committed cooperatives and small manufacturers, we think long-term, pay homage to the original craft, and work ethically for the environment and the people.
We make a difference.
SLOW FASHION is the future!

Photos from our visit to our suppliers and friends in Uttarakhand, Munnar, Mustang. Published in our book Weaving Threads.

BEHIND THE SCENE
We’re in luck! Just as we’re about to photograph the autumn cashmere collection from Nepal—featuring lovely layered looks—the sun comes out.☀️

We’re out on Färingsö, just outside Stockholm, where the photographer, Mats, lives. Suddenly, a neighbor rides by on horseback... as if on cue... It turns out to be a wonderful day with models Emil and Elena, production assistant Bettan, stylist Monica, and photographer Mats.

HELLO PEMA IN STOCKHOLM
We finally spent some time with Pema at the shop @spiritofthreads in Stockholm, following his months-long journey across Europe to meet people and give his well-attended talks. 🙏

We discussed the situation in Nepal following the natural disaster on the border between Nepal and Tibet, as well as his projects and travels.

🙏Thank you, Pema, for your warmth, kindness, and wisdom. I hope we see each other again soon, very soon!

THANKS FOR STOPPING BY!
What a wonderful day in the sign of color. Ulrika showed how to dye with vegetables, plants and minerals and create exciting clouds of colors.

A fascinating process where the textile is wrapped and steamed. Imagine that dyeing until chemistry came into the car in the 1880s was done this way...

❤️🌸🌿Thank you dear Ulrika for your tour today. We now have the store - St Paulsg 20, Stockholm- full of Ulrika’s vintage silk garments completely dyed naturally.
