💙 we are happy to publish another excellent edition by @matt7magee. Artwork was produced during his cultural exchange visit to Helsinki in June, supported by @scanhouse 🙌

LETTER FROM HELSINKI 🇫🇮
21x29,7cm
Arches Blanc
Edition 25

DM for price inquiry / Hinta DM:llä !!!

🔵’LETTER FROM HELSINKI’ is printed at the scale of an A4 sheet of paper, the standard generated by a computer with the concept that it’s a word document in cursive script. Encoded as an ideogram it represents wavy lines and edges in rivers, lakes and the sea which form Finland’s landmass. Also relevant to the op art of British artist Bridget Riley, I’ve explored this format quite a few times in drawings and paintings. The image is originally inspired by a tenure working on a seismic crew in South Texas (1980) recording underground geology via seismic waves .

Kuvan yleismuodon on alun perin inspiroinut työni seismisen mittausryhmän miehistössä Etelä Texasissa (1980), jossa tallensimme geologiaa seismisten aaltojen avulla.

Fresh Cut | Featured Work of the Day | Artist 33 of 50

Today we’re featuring Matt Magee’s “Panamarensis spikata” (2026). While rooted in the tradition of the floral still life, the painting departs from naturalism as each blossom is a luminous, emblematic form defined by concentric rings of color and a flickering central core. The measured placement of each blossom across the quiet, neutral ground lends the composition a sense of order, balancing a harmonious interplay of crimson, gold, violet, orange, and blue with geometric clarity. Over more than four decades, Magee has developed an abstract language grounded in repetition, pattern, and systems of organization. Here, the familiar bouquet is transformed into a constellation of recurring forms, distilling the natural world into a measured arrangement of color, geometry, and pattern.

Come see this work in “Fresh Cut” through July 24 !

(EN) ‘SOLAR ARRAY’ the largest lithograph and first in production, relates to the specific sunlight conditions in Helsinki this time of year. While a solar array is in fact a connected system of solar panels working together, this CONNECTED SYSTEM is the concept behind the lithograph. The image references the hard-edged abstraction of Ellsworth Kelly and the glowing pillars of light reflected in water as seen in the work of Edward Munch. ‘Solar Array’ positions a half or quarter sun in sequence on a line suggesting landscape. This language relies on the positive and negative spaces slipping between themselves. // Matt Magee

// Matt Magee
