POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Handed over the keys to 373 today, so here’s a little rhyming tribute to the old gal ✨

We laid eyes on you 1st
3 months before before our wedding
then hauled in all our books,
our cat, some cheap bedding.

You had brick, you had brownstone,
the New York apartment dream
and from day one we held you
in pretty high esteem.

We spent that first Christmas
Thanksgiving and New Year
using our registry loot to fill you
with food and good cheer.

Then the world shut down
faster than we could believe, and
you had to be a whole city
cuz technically we couldn’t leave.

You became our spa, gym, and office,
our cinema and corner bar,
our casino, our museum,
portal to places near and far.

We washed our groceries in your sink,
fed sourdough and yogurt starter.
For a while you were all we had,
which only made us love you harder.

We played hours of Wingspan,
hung our mugs all in a line,
and when the world opened up we batched cocktails so strong the whole room got high.

Under your roof I healed from 5 surgeries,
the cat recovered from 2.
Baths, swaps, and stoop hangs
were what got us through.

There were rhubarb and citrus socials
and friends reading books,
and about 17,000 different
hallway mirror looks.

We had fire escape doobies
and neighbors we adored
and endless attempts
to find a rug for the floor.

We grieved deaths, celebrated births,
and watched all of the Sopranos,
now it’s time to move somewhere
we can fit a piano.

I walk your empty rooms now
and feel surprisingly ok,
which either means I’m compartmentalizing
or it’s time to be on our way.

The thing is, we keep the best part—that’s all of you. (And now it’s the pals, not the apartment,
who I’m talking to.)

The space may recede now,
but it’s you who served us well,
you who gave us years of stories
we will always tell.

And now we get to do it again,
make new mems but keep the old—
“Change takes, but also gives,”
is how I’ve heard it told.

There’ll be no mail for Elif,
no more Adam, Rachel, or Donnie.
No more ledges for the kitty to sit,
No more Chester siren harmony.

No more buzzing us through Come-lit—
a fond farewell, it’s time to bid.
Our own parents never saw it,
so thank god all of you did.

last month I collaborated with @toldslant_felix, jonnie and @matt___bachmann to lay down the basics for a new @mutebenny LP at felix and jonnie’s cosy studio in bushwick.

As co-producer, my role is pretty open. I can play or not play, lead or allow others to lead. I’m technically an authority, but authority undermines itself when it acts only to perpetuate its own power. The entire session is an improvisation in itself. It is easy in this role to feel that one Should Be Doing Something, to need to justify one’s existence. Yet I believe that the best way to serve the music is to let go of any attachment to my own role and to focus in on the music itself.

I had a fantastic, communal, fun experience every day in the studio, but my favorite studio day was the one where Jordan sang all of his vocals. I spent 90% of it laying on the floor, listening, usually with my eyes closed. I don’t think I said more than a handful of things, because generally things were moving well and sounding great. Every once in a while, like noticing a loose thread on your shirt as it brushes your hand, something would nag at me slightly, and I would hone it on it slowly and then try to make one simple suggestion, sometimes a technical one, sometimes just a suggestion of a feeling. I love that co-producing is as much represented by this as it is by the days where I played piano for 8 hours. What a gig.

Before the session, inspired by bex, i consulted the tao by flipping to a random section and got this:

When praise is lavished upon the famous, the people contend and compete with one another.

When exotic goods are traded and treasured, the compulsion to steal is felt.

When desires are constantly stimulated, people become disturbed and confused.

Therefore, the wise person sets an example by emptying her mind, opening her heart, relaxing her ambitions, relinquishing her desires, cultivating her character. Having conquered her own cunning and cravings, she can't be manipulated by anyone.

Do by
not-doing.
Act with non-action.
Allow order to
arise of
itself.

As co-producer, my role is pretty open. I can play or not play, lead or allow others to lead. I’m technically an authority, but a

I’m very proud to say Songs of Hope for Gaza has raised nearly $3,000 for @aneraorg’s critical aid work in Palestine and beyond. Two months into a “ceasefire” that has seen innocent lives taken every day, I think we all know this is needed and so, so much more.

If you haven’t purchased the compilation yet, today is a great day to do that. It’s Bandcamp Friday, so 100% of your purchases go directly to musicians and labels, and in our case, directly to ANERA.

33 original songs, all written in and for this moment, available to you for a donation of any size at the link in bio.

The response to this benefit album has been seriously inspiring. I’m deeply honored to have gotten to work with @li_z_a_victoria and @dearliferecs on this project and in awe of all the musicians who rose to the immense challenge of trying to write something meaningful in the face of the daily horrors of genocide. I’m grateful to be in community with every one of you. It’s a community we need more than ever. Let’s keep leaning on each other and fighting for a better world.
