Blister
Dir. Olivia Simon
Screened as part of my remote press coverage for Overlook Film Festival

Trapped alone in a haunted room, a paranormal researcher’s experiment goes horrifically wrong.

This modern take on the classic horror novella The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman is truly haunting. We follow our young lead as she investigates a room ridden with damp. She dictates her stay in the room overnight, documenting at first the appearance then every strange happening; eerie shadows on the walls, faces appearing through the wallpaper, and ominous carvings on the side of a dresser.

I loved the decision to capture this in black and white; we can tell the room is dilapidated through the damp markings. It's not seen people in some time and the absence of an inside door handle should tell you all you need to know. It's as though the room itself is decaying, but that surely cannot be...

Then there's the ominous camera pinned to a corner of the room; that endless blinking light. We know someone is watching, someone has sent her there, but why?

Writer/Director Olivia Simon has created an effectively creepy and haunted film here. To showcase a story with one actor in a single location is tough yet this exudes a level of undeniable talent and skill. I loved the practical effects on display; when the reveal comes in the latter moments, there are some wonderful special effects makeup skills too.

Blister is a well-rounded and effective short horror sure to chill the bones of anyone who views it.
