Matt was my OG guinea pig.

(This one is going to be long)

He is a good friend of mine and one of the most disciplined people I have ever met. He trusted my knowledge and experience and is a big reason I am offering coaching to others today.

Together, we improved Matt’s marathon time by 47 minutes.

This took about a year. His first marathon was NYC in 2023. Expectation was to finish and have a good time. As it often happens, Matt finished that race and wanted more.

Matt spent the first half of 2024 establishing a substantial mileage base. We learned at the start of the year that he is pretty susceptible to injury if we introduce speed work too aggressively.

This is true for most people. Running is a single leg sport. We need to be careful not to introduce or change too many variables at once.

Skipping forward to that next marathon block…

Matt signed up for CIM. He was running 5 days per week with 2 quality sessions. He lifted 4-5 days per week. He biked 1-2 times each week for active recovery. He was on top of his nutrition. He prioritized sleep.

“Insane” lol. Like I said, one of the most disciplined people I know. His schedule is not for the faint of heart. But he loves it.

He made coaching pretty easy for me. I changed one variable, he executed. He gave helpful feedback. I learned very quickly what worked and what did not work.

As CIM approached, Matt’s fitness was showing up. We set an A goal, B goal, and C goal. The A goal felt scary but possible. This is one of the most fun parts in my opinion… I love putting together a race strategy that balances aspects of the course, nutrition, the conditions, and mindset.

With a solid taper, 3 day carb load, and a thorough race strategy… Matt crushed his A goal. He PRd his half within the full. His final 10K was his fastest 10K within the marathon. As a friend and coach, I could not be more proud of him.

Excited to see what Matt accomplishes next!
