#50daysto50 How do you measure a year in the life? 1996 was a year of many firsts. First lead in a musical (The Beggar’s Opera at University of Calgary), first part-time job (Blockbuster Video - which basically was my film school), and first professional acting gig (apprentice for Shakespeare in the Park). I played a tree in Midsummer Night’s Dream and I also got to play my first “asshole white guy in a suit” character (the first of many) in a western version of King Lear (to my left is the genius improviser/actor Matt Baram). In October of 1996 (30 years ago), my parents were so inspired by my performance as a tree in Midsummer Nights Dream that they shipped me off to the Upper West Side of Manhattan (home to many great trees) to study more tree acting at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy within the historic Ansonia building. Even though I just wanted to study tree acting, I was forced to learn how to dance and sing so I could be a tree-ple threat. I saw my first Broadway show that fall, witnessing the great Nathan Lane in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. And of course in 1996… everything was Rent.
