Last night, @cheadwrites, Teresa, Michael, and I attended the opening night of Sondheim’s MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG at @sigtheatre. .

It’s a gorgeous production—my God, those costumes alone!—performed by a stellar cast. One of the most challenging pieces in musical theater, @mattcgardiner direction showed nuance and restraint when needed and full-out joy for the ensemble numbers. It was clear to the audience how much the show means to him.

Franklin Shepard was a great role for @jasongotay. (It was great to see him again after having enjoyed his performance in FLOYD COLLINS at Lincoln Center last season.) He allowed the audience to experience all that was going on in his mind, without a word or note. Melanie Field brought both humor and pathos to Mary Flynn. And never underestimate Jake Lowenthal. We have been following his career at Signature for years and he just keeps getting better. His “Franklin Shepard, Inc.” stopped the show and brought down the house. And lastly, but certainly not least, a special shoutout to a personal favorite, @mariarizz9o. I would struggle to find a more perfect marriage between role and performer on any regional stage. Her turn as Gussie Carnegie had ALL the elements with a sexiness that was off the charts. The entire ensemble was excellent—as always at this theater—and the combination makes for one unforgettable night out.

It was meaningful to see a Sondheim show with Cheryl, with us both having published in Josh Pachter’s EVERY DAY A LITTLE DEATH: CRIME FICTION INSPIRED BY THE SONGS OF STEPHEN SONDHEIM. (Remember, Cheryl’s story, “Brotherly Love” is nominated for the Anthony Award at the upcoming Bouchercon in Calgary.)

If you are local, MERRILY runs until November 1, so treat yourself to a night at the theater. You won’t regret it.
