There is legend of a surf map for Buffalo, NY — one that marks all the treasured, local surf spots. The goldmine was created by Ward and Mo Pink in the late 80s while running their shop, Urban Surfer.

The 80s were a slower time for lake surfing between the 60s and the new millennia, and the map, now long gone, is a testament to the ages and changes of a surf scene that’s been here since the beginning.

Magilla Schaus, before Ward and Mo, pioneered the area and ventured into Canada across the Peace Bridge. What’s interesting about the area, and presumably the map, is the vast amount of spots to explore. From sandy beaches, to marooned freighters, to shoals a mile offshore, to rocky point breaks, the region is loaded.

But it’s not solely inhabited by surfers. Buffalo and beyond is a waterman’s paradise. Matt Domanowski, a local golden retriever, told us the weaving history of longboarding, SUP, kiting, to foiling, all in the search of riding water.

Every local I interviewed is a water enthusiast. They do surf, but they can’t help but dabble.

This complicates the map quite a bit. My head spun as surf spot after surf spot was named. “You surf logs here. When it’s 12ft, you shortboard here. You can kite a mile offshore to ride an A-frame on this shoal…”

You can’t talk about the “pure surf” scene in Buffalo without hearing about every other water sport taking place. There are maybe only a dozen surfers practicing monogamy in board sport.

Of all the spots, there are even more across the bridge to Canada. Some pass through customs, but many are content to leave the bridge uncrossed. So, the Buffalo scene, while adjacent to scenes in Ontario, are distinct.

Instead, breaks to the southwest of the city are more prominent, going about as far as Silver Creek, where a resort hosts one of the most protected and groomed waves. The owners of the resort, Kevin and Christian Cullen, are among the list of Buffalo water enthusiasts.

The map is probably gone forever, but the scene that the early surfers worked so hard to explore and share is alive. And per conversation, it sounds like the map isn’t really needed anymore, anyway.

Wow, Happy one year anniversary to us! I wanted to make a collage of the comments some super awesome people had about us before we opened. Feel free to let em' know we severely underperformed with the whole "immediate closing", drug dealing and fight club expectations they had for us! Unfortunately, all we had were awesome times, great friendships, skateboarding and community building.

Thank you to all the skaters, scooter riders, brands and pros that help us do what we do. We look forward to another year that will be bigger and better than the last!

Come celebrate this weekend with us at the Cook Off: Summer Open '24. Registration is still open online with final registration in person the day of the events!🥡❤️🛹
