Tres Hombres Sail Cargo Ship ~ 3rd July- 6th August
Bornholm 🇩🇰 -Normandy 🇫🇷- Getaria 🇪🇸

It felt like such a huge privilege to find myself surrounded by people I admired so much, and contributing to a project which I've been impressed by for so many years. The sailing brought out the best in people quickly, and really I was learning and laughing every day. Thankyou so much for having me @fairtransport.shipping , I feel more alive than ever.

Some of these photos are from our glorious mate, who I'm really grateful to as my phone is specialising in blurry things at the moment.

Our watch was off today so 3 of us went to a castle a short bus ride on this small island of Bornholm.

We brought a picnic.

There was a choice between waiting for a second bus to drop us off, or a mile and a half walk, so we walked. Grain grew on either side of the road. One side golden in the sun, the other side planted a bit later and still green. Flowers grew into the grain from the side of the road.

There was a quarry and a forest that suggested the medieval ruin ahead. We emerged next to a road and a parking lot full of busses. A cafe carved into the side of a cliff overlooking Hammershus Slotsruin (castle ruin).

It was the islands fortress since the late 1200s but it seems most often a prison and generally considered a resource suck by the local population. In the early 19th decades of abandonment combined with some nostalgia for earlier times after losing some wars turned it into a popular picturesque ruin worthy of preservation

If the crowds of folks marching past the old execution rock and through its non existent gates are any indicator, it remains as popular as ever.

Outside the castle is a trail along the coast. We stop by a little bay to have a picnic. A large swan lands almost on top of us. It’s broadens its shoulders and starts to march on us. Behind him is what must be his mate with some baby swans. We make a swift retreat and continue our exploration.

We have beer at a seaside cafe on the other side of the bay where they used to load rock into ships. It’s a short walk to the quarry lakes where one of us takes a jump. Then it’s up the side of a small mountain to a light house in the clouds and down through more forest and coast to a old church ruin on the coast called Solomon’s chapel that’s also in the clouds.

Moar coast. Some rain. Many sea birds ane some suspicious goats.

After a few miles more a smoke house with all the little smoked fishes we can eat.

We are safe inside the tiny stone quayside in Gudhjem. Which is good because the wind has started to blow. It seems like it will keep us here for a while. There is plenty to do. Wine must be unloaded for the wine bar here. There are always jobs Lon the boat and the town is very beautiful.

Our enginless cargo ship plays by different rules than other boats. Many other considerations. Without a motor the operation of getting on and off the quay and through the narrow channel is a feat. The type of window needed is more more specific. Not so much wind that we can control her through the channel and not so little that we can’t set.

The daily motor ferry to the island an hour from town makes the channel three times a day. Even with us filling up the little harbor it has no problem making the run. Much smaller sailboats drop their sails and get their engines running before narrowly slipping in.

Also, the ship looks very nice on the quayside and the townsfolk and touristy visitors seem to love the story of the wine ship that comes once a year. The resulting hospitality makes the wait for the weather very easy.

Plenty to do. Plenty of wine at the wine bar and today a BBQ.

We wait and it ain’t that bad.

Arrival. July 2. Part 2.

We have arrived. But I can’t focus on her for now. We are tied to land, but must warp the ship into its final position in the Marty harbor. It starts to rain. One by one lines are made fast to shore and pulled by us on deck. the dingy pushes the bow and hand over hand and inch by inch she’s coaxed into place.

We furl in the warm rain over a smart looking town of yellow and ochre buildings. A squall approaches. Had we moored ten minutes later we might be on anchor instead of town… or perhaps even still sailing.

The tarp is put up amidships. A man with a captains hat, a chin strap beard and glasses brings a case of beer. They are cracked and congratulations echo over the cargo hatch.

A half hour later we are told to meet at the wine bar. The final destination for the wine we carry. They have made us dinner.

Live music arrives shortly after we do. A few minutes later a man brings his son, a little boy dressed as a pirate with a sword stuffed in his belt over his red stripped shirt. Apparently he’d begged his dad to take him to see the pirate ship before he went to bed. When he met the captain he buried his face into his father’s shoulder. The little man suddenly too shy to follow through with whatever big questions he’d imagined he’d ask a real life Captain of a pirate ship.

The food is good and plentiful and so is the wine. Music shifts from a duet of guitar and horn to an accordion, and ends on the piano as the sun falls almost as far as it can at these latitudes this time of year.

Some of the beautiful moments from this year!
This year I was under the sign of growing my fringe out (which will not last I’m afraid)! The first half was amazing, social, beautiful, happy! The second was more difficult I needed recollection, to slow down, to share less, but I hope it will be useful! New things happened, A LOT changed - love…?! Anyway can’t wait to see more, I’m too hasty I forget to live the moment. Wait a bit and I’ll be back on my feet.
