It’s Jazz Night every Wednesday (6-9pm) at Matteo Downtown! This stunning venue in the CBD (20 Bond St, adjacent to Australia Square) delivers fabulously, deliciously uncompromising Italian cuisine.

Matteo Downtown’s menu comprises traditional and superb flavours synonymous with great Northern Italian food; classic dishes range from handmade pasta with stone-baked breads to traditional wood fired pizza. This all complimented by a beverage menu derived from Italian origins, boasting an array of authentic wines, cocktails and beers with a Downtown twist.

I’ll be providing the soundtrack to this amazing venue with my duo every Wednesday; this week with Rob James on guitar.

An Anna’s Belly STAPLE

Food is consistently amazing and love the vibe here. Such a reliable spot for a good feed and whilst service isn’t a standout I always have a good time here

That crab pasta was def a fav and I absolutely love the pizza base here. Tiramisu had some caramel notes in it which I enjoyed 🍝

Anna’s Belly APPROVED ✅ 9/10

Double Bay

Ken doesn't run a fixed omakase. What lands on his counter is whatever arrived at the market that day, assembled on instinct rather than a spreadsheet. Nothing is written down in advance. Sometimes that works against him. When it lands, though, it lands hard.

The double imperador nigiri stacked belly against another cut, contrasting textures in one bite. Visually and flavour-wise, it was unlike anything I’d had before. Worth the mess. Chutoro served without soy, letting the shari itself carry the flavour, was a small, pointed lesson in restraint - completely new to me. The four-way toro progression had its own hierarchy too; the uni ootoro temaki was gone in one bite, a flavour bomb.

What Ken's really known for is how far he's willing to push the produce. Kingfish belly draped in foie gras, salt and cream adding richness the fish alone couldn’t provide. Swordfish belly cut against apple pickle and wasabi, the sharpness slicing clean through the fish's own acidity. None of these is safe combinations on paper. He's not building a dish to look clever; he's building it around what a piece of fish needs that day.

The nature of Ken running on feeling instead of formula - not every call is going to land the same way twice, and that's sort of the point. He isn't cooking to a script and most of the time that's exactly what makes it worth the seat.
