Student Spotlight: Matthew, Class of 2028

Prior healthcare experience: Emergency Department Technician

Outside of the classroom you can find me: Exploring National Parks- 18 in the last 2 years and nearly 30 in total!

Why I chose the Wichita State PA Program: The emphasis on rural and underserved populations, combined with over half a century’s worth of producing reliable clinicians. WSU’s established clinical rotations will gift me an advanced opportunity to thoroughly learn and grow during my clinical rotations. Its affordability is also unmatched for such a rich history of PA education!

My advice for future PA students: “Looking shiny on a paper application isn’t everything. Be genuine, authentic, and stray from robotic. It’s also okay to not be type-A!”

What specialty do I think I may begin practicing in: As of right now… Emergency Medicine/pursue an EM fellowship, or work in trauma/critical care.

Matthew Bridges is a senior studying Exercise Science with a minor in Business, and is on the Pre-Physician Assistant track. Outside of his studies, Matthew stays busy by being involved in Delta Epsilon Mu, Habitat for Humanity, Health International KU, and Club Tennis, as well as working at Lawrence Memorial Hospital as a Patient Care Technician in the Emergency Room.

Being raised by a Jayhawk and living just 30 minutes east of Lawrence, Matthew felt like KU was an affordable, yet perfect fit for him. But finding himself at KU was where he felt like he had some trouble.

“My freshman year I was pretty uninvolved and I was a little disappointed in myself,” Matthew said. “So sophomore year I really started to throw myself out there. I did research on pre-health involvements that I could get involved in and I found Health International KU.”

From Health International KU and his further involvements, Matthew gained unique skills and experiences.

“I found a large passion in employing empathy in pretty much anything I do,” Matthew said, “putting myself in the perspective of somebody else, someone who’s less fortunate than I am, someone who’s more fortunate than I am, to give myself a better overall perspective around what students surround me at KU and how I can interact with them.”

With less than two months left in his time at KU, Matthew shares his advice for current students.

“Get out of your dorm,” Matthew said. “Get out of your apartment. I know it’s difficult to get out of bed sometimes. Nobody likes to wake up for the 8 AM, but the more you immerse yourself, the more memories you’ll have to reflect on. You don’t think the four years go by fast enough until you’re a senior and it’s almost over.”

Grateful for every new experience and every new person he met, Matthew is a strong believer in the butterfly effect.

“Something that happens right now could drastically change your future,” Matthew said. “Something as simple as going to class versus you skipping class. You could sit next to someone who completely alters or changes the course of what you choose to pursue at KU, so get up and do the thing.”
