Turps East Sussex Programme is a mentoring programme for painters whose studios are based in East Sussex.

Turps mentors visit participants in their own studios for one-to-one tutorials. Participants develop a supportive network of peers across the region through regularly scheduled group crits in Hastings and Brighton. Monthly artist talks will take place alternately at Hastings Contemporary and Phoenix Art Space throughout the academic year.

Turps East Sussex is an alternative learning programme, not an accredited educational qualification. It is an opportunity for painters who are experienced in their practice to further their exploration of the media and re-energise that practice through a rigorous work ethic and critical engagement with peers and practicing artists, all within a supportive, timetabled structure.

PAINTING AS RESISTANCE

Lately I’ve found myself struggling to make sense of the world.

The violence.
The manipulation.
The way cruelty is normalised, packaged, and sold back to us as politics, entertainment, even identity.

And I’ve been asking a question many artists are quietly asking too:

How do we respond without becoming what we hate?

I’ve written a new essay called Painting as Resistance, not as an argument, and not as a solution, but as an attempt to reflect on what the studio can still offer in a time of moral exhaustion.

“Perhaps the real resistance is to keep our capacity for tenderness alive.”

For me, painting is not an escape from reality.
It’s a way of staying human inside it.

For the last 30 years, a quiet but constant part of my practice has been supporting friends and fellow artists. It’s been one of the most rewarding things I’ve done, and it’s fed back into my own work in ways I couldn’t have predicted.

What’s less visible is that I’ve always been supported too. None of us does this alone. Mentors, peers, people who ask the right questions at the right moment - they matter.

This weekend I had @sarahpickstone and @karolinaalbricht in the studio, digging deep into a new body of paintings, my ambitions, and what I’m really trying to move toward. I came out the other side feeling focused, energised, and quietly optimistic.

(And yes… slightly hungover.)

RWA tonight. Opens to the public tomorrow.

When I graduated as a student in the mid 90’s it was all about being a superstar. It was individualistic and highly competitive. It wasn’t good for a developing creative spirit.

As I’ve grown as an artist I’ve realised the value of institutions like the RWA. They create a visible opportunity for artists to come together in support of one another, as a community, and within a community.

The magnificent galleries at the RWA are a gem in the centre of Bristol. Go see.

Matthew Burrows is our judge number two!

Matthew Burrows MBE (born 1971) is a contemporary British painter and founder of Artist Support Pledge, a global movement in support of artists and makers. Matthew lives and works in the UK and is represented by Vigo Gallery London.

Burrows speaks of painting as a form of subsistence, dependent on and arising from the ground at his feet. Through the layering of colour and line, Burrows creates images that invite mediation and a slow unraveling of space and experience. He speaks of his work as ‘one of dwelling and ritual, a process of mythologizing, of drawing meaning from the particularities of the environment and his movement in and through it’. His work explores the conditions by which we thrive and connect – individually, communally and cosmologically.

‘A Generous Space 2’ follows on from a sucessful exhibition earlier in the year at Hastings Contemporary (@_art_on_sea). The New Art Gallery Walsall’s Director Stephen Snoddy (@snoddy.stephen) selected 50 artists signed up to the @artistsupportpledge and in turn asked each selected artist to select one further artist, to create an exhibition of 100 artworks by 100 artists.

All works are for sale. See the exhibition at The New Art Gallery Walsall until 25 September.
