I'm in an exhibition! And it is in an old railway station too. The Venn diagram of niche interests is finally paying off. Gaze at the wonderfully designed poster for details:

‘Flowers’ by Matthew Clifton, currently on display at Soup in Elephant & Castle as part of the two-person exhibition ‘Common Place’ w. Faith Hughes, which continues until March 28th.

“Coarse landscape studies, sentimental street scenes and dense abstracted details mark Clifton’s drawing and painting practice, all depicted with the formality and accuracy of a distant memory as historical motifs merge with contemporary vignettes to capture everyday suburban settings. Hughes, meanwhile, shifts through vintage film clips, forgotten home movies and archival instructional videos in a practice combining painting with sculpted craft, where found footage serves to distill her experience of living and remembering, and images are immortalised as objects, regenerating meaning through making.

For Common Place, small-scale works are presented as if to replicate a cinematic storyboard. The faded, seedy glamour of Hollywood noirs meeting the cramped, gritty realism of British kitchen sink dramas. Austere, ordinary or otherwise everyday images are uplifted by Clifton and Hughes, as both artists demonstrate their own interest in – and approach to – location, place and daily domesticity.

Clifton’s oil on canvas board paintings, their imagery pulled from the artist’s own archive of casual, phone-camera snapshots, retain the spirit of the sketchbook. The studies bounce between subjects, while patterns begin to appear amongst the selected scenes; gradual disintegration, as cowboy stickers are scratched or partially peeled from their charity-shop chest of drawers backing, or flowers droop, wilting on a windowsill. Elsewhere, the sudden, unexpected stasis of the ordinarily mobile – miniature models of majestic sailboats, cars crashed or covered, an empty A-road roundabout.” - Soup

Big thank you to @campbell.hector for inviting me to write the accompanying essay for Faith Hughes and Matthew Clifton’s beautiful exhibition ‘Common Place’ at @soup.ldn which runs until March 28th. I had the pleasure of writing about paintings, films and cities for the micro-publication designed by @foolscap.editions. The essay is available to read online at soupldn.com. 🖋️

HUM by @emmaewilde & @matthewclifton

On exhibition till the 5th of April.

HUM is the quiet soundtrack of the in-between hours, capturing the subtle resonance felt in suburban spaces when the day hangs suspended. 3PM in a cul-de-sac, where the murmur of birds chirping bleeds into the drone of tyres passing by on the dual carriageway.

Shallow Gallery is presented by @artscentralstudios

You can find Shallow Gallery on the outside walkway of the @centremk, to the left of Field Walk entrance (Door 13) and next to Next. The gallery is free to visit and publicly accessible 24/7.
