As National Arts in Education Week comes to a close, we’re reflecting on why the arts—and access to arts education—matter so deeply.

This week, the theater community lost an extraordinary artist in Duncan Sheik, whose music and storytelling helped shape contemporary musical theater. His work on Spring Awakening challenged conventions, gave voice to complicated emotions and showed what can happen when artists are encouraged to create something bold, original and deeply human.

In his memory, we’re sharing photos from our own past productions of Spring Awakening—a show that challenged our students to trust one another, take artistic risks and experience the power of storytelling.

That is one of the greatest gifts of arts education. The arts teach young people to create, imagine, collaborate, empathize, take risks and find their own voices. What happens in a classroom, rehearsal room or on a stage is about so much more than putting on a show.

And that’s why we’re so dedicated to Building Characters—helping young artists grow in confidence, courage, creativity and character, both on the stage and off.

As we close this special week, we celebrate the artists and educators who inspire us, the students creating today, and all the stories still waiting to be told.

Thank you, Duncan Sheik, for the music, inspiration and stories. Your work will continue to inspire generations of young artists. ❤️
