Supporting high performance!

Men’s volleyball fifth-year middle Thys Weststrate and head coach Scott Koskie are among 55 athlete-and-coach pairings selected to be part of Petro-Canada’s Fuelling Athlete and Coaching Excellence Program (FACE) Class of 2026.

The program helps Canadian Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls and is intended for athletes who are showing potential as a future member of Team Canada but don’t yet qualify for government funding.

Each year National Sport Organizations nominate athlete-and-coach pairings, with 55 selected to receive a $10,000 FACE grant which is split evenly between the athlete and coach.

Wouldn’t change a thing about how my career has shaped out at ubco. Through years of adversity to new heights and heartbreak, I’m proud of the whole journey and where it has taken me. Grateful to have been able to call ubco and Kelowna home for the past 5 years. The amount of support I’ve received has been life changing. Thank you to everyone I met during this time of my life💙

Congratulations to M🏐 Zach van Geel and M🏐 Thys Weststrate for being named this week’s Athletes of the Week powered by Meal Prep For You!!

In what turned out to be his final games with the Heat, fifth-year setter Zach van Geel put in a memorable effort for UBCO in their Canada West quarter-final series against the Manitoba Bisons.

Battling through an injury that has been nagging him most of the season, van Geel averaged 9.6 assists per set over the three game series, highlighted by a 47-assist night in UBCO’s five-set victory over the Bisons in Game 2. He would go on to add 43 assists in Game 3, a 10.8 assists per set rate, to go out with one of the best performances of his career.

Van Geel was also a force defensively throughout the series, finishing with 27 digs over three games along with nine blocks.

Fourth-year middle Thys Weststrate played a major role for the Heat in their first-ever home playoff series last weekend against the Manitoba Bisons.

The Kelowna native shone bright each night, leading UBCO in kills and points in two of the three games. During the series, Weststrate recorded 45 kills, three aces, 25 digs and 16 blocks for 57.5 points. Amazingly, Weststrate hit a sparkling 0.429 percent, posting two of the top seven single playoff game hitting marks in program history. His 20.5 points in the Heat’s Game 2 win was also tied for the third-highest point total in a single game in team history.

What a phenomenal season we all had the chance to be witness to whether as staff or as fans in the crowd! 🫱🏽‍🫲🏻

Having worked every home game since the start of the 2023 season, it has been one heck of a ride to see the team develop and expand into what it became this year! These guys laid it out all there each and every night and although they didn’t end with the final outcome that we were all looking for they should be insanely proud of the kind of breakout season they had and with all the records they broke.

For context: I decided to bring out my camera for Sunday’s Game 3 with the idea that if I could get a few spare minutes during commercial break on broadcast, that I would take some pictures. Here are some of the ones I was able to snag from underneath the video board and around our broadcast table in the span of approx 8 minutes.

With another Heat season under my belt, all I can say is that I am always so excited for the next and thankful for the opportunities every weekend to enjoy what I love.
