"Bempton Cliffs Seabird Colony" by #MariaSimonovaArt
Oil on canvas

Here is my latest artwork, recently completed for my second ever commission for @brianjameslew as a present for @mattlew

● I was asked to paint a busy #seabirds colony at @rspb_love_nature nature reserve @rspbbemptoncliffs
The star species, such as #gannet #puffin and #guillemot are all busy fishing and raising their ever hungry chicks in my painting!

Swipe for details, my painting process and preparatory sketches👈

● As usual with my artworks I did not copy any photographs, but used many photos, including my own, for detail reference.
I then came up with and sketched the overall composition and individual bird poses.

● Being a nature and bird enthusiast myself, I truly loved painting this scene and did my best to capture the spirit and atmosphere of the dynamism and busy action happening at the colony as the birds fly back and forth around the sheer white chalk cliffs to feed their chicks and head back out to sea.
And as always, I aimed to capture the birds' diverse charaters and make them as life-like as possible.

● I also enjoyed the challenge of this artwork in the form of its small size - it is my smallest oil painting so far!
At just A4 (21cm × 30 cm) I had to use my tiniest paintbrush to make sure I can do justice to all the tiny details😅 A very good exercise at precision indeed!

+ You can find my tiny self-portrait at the bottom right. I noticed myself including one in all my recent artworks, so I've turned it into my unique signature mark of authenticity!
Its bigger significance is reflecting the humbling and awe-inspiring feeling I, the artist, get when standing before my artwork's majestic subject of natural beauty✨ grateful to be able to experience, express and share it through my #art

● Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity - it was a pleasure to create this artwork💙
