I’ve estimated that in the 15 years I’ve known Matt, I’ve probably spent a cumulative four months of my life in New Orleans. At this point, I feel like that has to qualify me as some kind of part-time resident.

This latest trip was equal parts sweet and bittersweet. Matt came down with food poisoning early on, which unexpectedly left me to my own devices for part of the week. In the end, it was a blessing in disguise—I wandered into corners of the city I’d never seen before and got to experience New Orleans in a different way.

Now I’m back home, missing my Southern second home, but grateful to be reunited with low humidity.

I don’t know why it took me so long to wrap my head around being chosen for this new project. But I was, I did it, and it took me forever to take stock of what I’ve accomplished. I did all this while still working on our beloved @kqed show #checkpleasebayarea (and still am, woohoo!)

But the last couple of weeks got me so, so, so, so, so excited about how far we’ve come on this project that started wellll over a year ago.

Soooo, without further ado, hello! My name is Cecilia Phillips and I am the host of KQED’s new digital food series, Beyond the Menu.

Beyond the Menu takes you on a deep dive into the far reaches of history to explore the origins of dishes from around the world. It’s fascinating food stories with beautiful cinematography.

For my role, I have had the opportunity to meet even more amazing chefs and storytellers like @eatchofood and @milkandcardamom. I got to taste and learn about even more unique foods from pineapple buns to samosas, and I’ve pushed the boundaries of my comfort zone as a host.
