$The Prada Frames event was a delightful cornucopia of encounters, conversations, musical events and art. Curated with great attention and care by the good people of @formafantasma, it made use of the extraordinary space of the Basilica di Santa Maria delle Grazie (where Leonardo had painted The Last Supper), to reflect on the role of images today. While acknowledging the fracturing role of image infrastructures - so powerfully articulated by @_katecrawford_ in her keynote - my own contribution focused on the idea of 'the generous image'. I traced a historical genealogy between generativity and generosity in a way that allows us to read images today as vital sources that exceed the (non)imaginative limitations of generative AI. The Bramante sacristy, featuring a row of images surrounding our bodies and minds, offered a beautiful illustration of the concept of the ‘image envelope’ I’ve been working with since The Perception Machine. I also had a chance to visit the @FondazionePrada exhibitions: Hito Steyerl at the Osservatorio, and shows by Mona Hatoum and Cao Fei at the other location. The Cao Fei project, called DASH, is something else. Thoroughly, almost obsessively, researched and expansively presented, it outlines the concept of precision agriculture across China, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos, while reflecting on the role of spraying drones as both efficiency machines and spiritual objects. Some of the visual language plays with a propaganda aesthetic — both that of Mao’s campaign for the mechanisation of agriculture and of the drone manufacturers’ publicity videos. Yet there is something else that haunts the exhibition: a nonhuman visuality that builds on the techno-weirdness of the internet while encompassing the spirit of Erik Davis' TechGnosis.$
