We had the pleasure of workshopping two new shows this year up @dramaclubprod in Maine - once earlier this Spring, and again this Fall just as the leaves were turning. Needless to say, we also had a lot of fun. Looking forward to sharing some exciting news in the near future, but in the meantime, here’s some snapshots of our time up North!

Back in January, Canyon, a new contemporary art space opening on the Lower East Side in fall 2026, invited us into their 40,000 square foot space to capture its raw acoustics before they broke ground in February - just concrete and glass with a seven-second decay. We thought one of our our newest songs, “Whippoorwill” off our latest EP from earlier this year would be fun to play in here, especially the ending. Canyon documented this fleeting sonic moment with “Echoes: Live at Canyon,” a series of performances by local musicians. You can watch them all over at @canyon.ny - Full video at link in our bio, too.

It has been 14 years since I was a student at @cmudrama — and next week I will, at long last, be back in Pittsburgh leading a workshop with the MFA Directors and Staging Media class. Thanks to Lawrence Shea and @kimweild for bringing me out there — and of course to @parsonweems for bringing me to Pittsburgh in the first place. Probably not enough time for a trip to Kennywood while I’m out there — but I did manage to dredge up a few surviving artifacts from my time in the program.

It’s album release day! ‘Out of the Overture’, our latest EP of new songs, is out on all streaming platforms TODAY, containing the third and final single, ‘The Green Light’. Each song on ‘Out of the Overture’ was, in hindsight, born out of completely different approaches to songwriting, and each a collaborative effort. ‘The Green Light’ started as prompt that Matt gave Ryan to “write a song in the style of Willie Nelson”. Ryan came back with the haunting verse and chorus. After some of the band played with it for a while, Dan proposed singing the refrain over a different set of chords that served as a bridge taking the song to an entirely different place by the end. The tracks on this album are in some ways the most autobiographical in terms of what it’s like and where we’re at in this nearly 20-year collaboration. We’ve got lots of exciting news this year that we can’t wait to share with you, and this EP feels like the best way to kick off this next chapter. ‘Out of the Overture’ is dedicated to all the places where we wrote and recorded these songs, and the people who opened their doors to us. These places were mostly up in the woods north of NYC, away from the noise. One of the very first songs we wrote as a band, ‘Bremen’, was based on a fairy tale called ‘The Bremen Town Musicians’. It’s interesting to note that at the end of the story, the group of animals never make it to Bremen. Instead, they stay in the woods making music for the rest of their days. Enjoy ‘Out of the Overture’ wherever you stream your music!

‘Many Men’, the second single from our EP, ‘Out of the Overture’ is out today! In contrast to ‘Whippoorwill’, which came together in an afternoon, ‘Many Men’ is a song 8 years in the making. The song started as just a simple guitar riff that Ben would noodle at soundcheck before shows and quickly got stuck in the rest of the band’s ears. Finally, at a songwriting session at one of our favorite spots to work on new projects, @horizonviewfarms , Dan started singing a wordless melody over the band. Ben took that melody, and wrote lyrics to what eventually became a song about the band itself. The song tells the story of the band’s highs and lows, and ultimately points toward the future. When a group of us finally recorded the song at another favorite creative retreat, @cosmichollow, we discovered that we wanted it to sound like the soundchecks and band rehearsals where we workshopped the tune. We even recorded the drums with two mics @battalionstudios , where we still rehearse regularly. We hope you enjoy the song! Stream ‘Many Men’ wherever you get your music. Also, ‘Out of the Overture’ is now available to pre-save on Spotify!

‘Whippoorwill’, the first single from our 3-song EP, ‘Out of the Overture’ has been out for almost a week! To celebrate, here’s a lyric video that we made alongside the song. Link to full video in bio. Enjoy! Pick a better perch Than the one you’re on Leaf bare branch of a burning brand Waiting on the word Like a mockingbird When you oughta be aloft By your own two hands Whippoorwill woah now Whippoorwill woah Gather up your strength now Beak to toe Learn a sweeter song Than the one you sing Monotone tune from a rotten old hymnal Whistle whatever wisdom springs Clean from the mouth of the fount eternal Whippoorwill woah now Whippoorwill woah Gather up your strength now Beak to toe Line a finer coffin deep with down Pray the same savior soon comes down Lay a little egg on your bed of down And up go ya go now go on now Graze a greener field than the one you’re in Brackish turf by the rapid ocean Gather up the flock on a floating dock And paddle on down to the railway station The sooner you go well the sooner you get Give up grandson whatcha got left Peel the last prayer from the palimpsest And find a better perch to stand Learn a sweeter song to sing Raise a better yield for to graze a greener field while you whistle what wisdom springs whistle what wisdom springs I can’t see you But I can hear you ‘Out of the Overture’ is out on all streaming platforms Jan 7, 2026. Our new 3-song EP is called Out of the Overture. The first single, Whippoorwill, is out today! This batch of songs came to be through a series of weekend songwriting sessions a group of us would take between 2022 and 2024 to get out of the city and remind ourselves how to play as a band after the pandemic. We came out of those sessions with over a dozen new songs, workshopped a few live at concerts with the rest of the band, and decided to record, mix, and design the album artwork ourselves. The songwriting process for each track was completely different. Whippoorwill was a set of lyrics that Dan had been working on over lockdown, and was inspired to take the song in a different direction when he heard Ben noodling what would become the main guitar riff. 3 hours later, the whole group was singing the vocal round for the ending and the song was written. Any artist knows it almost never comes together that quickly, but that this song did was a great reminder of the excitement of making music together. Out of the Overture is out January 7th on all streaming platforms. Tracklist: Whippoorwill Many Men The Green Light We’re so thrilled for you all to hear these songs, and we’re excited to share more of what we’ve been up to very soon!
